Do your on-call nurses come in if short?

Published

We have 3 nurses that go on-call on a rotating basis: 1 is the DON, 1 is the ADON and the other is the MDS Coordinator/LVN. When we are short, and I mean very short at times, only 1 comes in to help when she is on call .

Do your on-call nurses fill in when short? Aren't they supposed to? What is an on-call nurse for then?

When I worked at an LTC in Wyoming we were short of CNA's. The DON came in and worked the floor as a CNA several times. I really had a lot of respect and admiration for this DON. :)

In the facility where I work, there are 3 floor nurses, the DON, ADON, and MDS who rotate being on call. As to if they come in, well, it depends on which one is on call and who is doing the calling.
