Do males get "preferential" treatment in regards to school acceptances?

Hello fellow nursing man,

To answer your question there is no "extra points" for being a male when applying to nursing school. Why is that? Because it should not be based off the applicants gender but rather their academic success during school.

But don't fret, I feel that us males that enter the nursing environment take this profession more seriously and are also taken more seriously by our mentors and professors because we see nursing as a career ladder instead of a job. I have also noticed that as a male, I am more confident when attempting to speak with a future potential employeer on my clinical rotations.

Keep it up males out there! We are growing in #'s!!!

I know that at my school 20% or 30% (I'm not to sure on the exact number) are held for male students.

I don't think my university has a quota but they really do like having male nursing students.

I am in an ASN program at this time, about to start my second year, and I had to apply twice to get in. The first time they said that I wasn't able to enrol in the program tdue to "hight stress indicators" on my entrance exam. I was the only male to apply that year.

When I did giet in this past year, there were only 12 of us men in the class with around 95 women...now there are around 50 women and 7 men.

I don't think that they are holding spots open for us, or that they are allowing us to enter just because we are male; but I do think that they get exceited when we walk through the door each day!!

Completely agree with the last sentence in your post Wanahakalugi (nice name by the way). I have yet to come across a single nurse or nursing instructor whose attitude doesn't change at least a little when a male nurse is around.
