The way we do our silos- they are held up by some twill tape looped over the top of the warmer. If you keep the same tension, why not let parents hold? One particular surgeon was adamant about not letting parents hold...
Seems silly to keep giving pain meds to make a crabby baby happy when he would be just as happy in mom's arms.

No we don't. I think the concern there is possible tension/torsion on the silo if the parents or baby move. Plus I'm not sure what stable object we would be able to support the silo to. I get what you're saying about pain meds, but I feel like the risks are substantial too.
Curious... what does your silo look like? Does it have the "springloaded" metal ring that pops under the skin then the mesh-type bag that rises above? Have you ever had one come out accidently? I've never seen one come out, and unfortunately the last 5-8 years we've had A LOT of gastros.

No, we do not, due to the risk of the silo popping off.

Nope. Too much risk of dislodging the silo and subsequent disembowelment. Also, the risk of increased intraabdominal pressure could compromise the bowel.

No, never. Our silos are plastic bags that fit just under the lip of skin around the defect and hang from the warming table above. There is too much danger of the bag coming off, getting twisted, all sorts of problems if the baby is even moved very much.

Absolutley not. Too much risk for that silo ring to pop out and the bowel to move back out thru that defect. Somethings are beyond our control and some kids just can't be held by mama right away.
