Do insurance companies cover psychotherapy services rendered by psychiatric NP?

Published

Does anyone know whether insurance companies cover psychotherapy services rendered by psychiatric nurse practitioners in NJ? Thanks for your help.

Mine doesn't cover anything except a licensed social worker or lic. NP or a psychiatrist. This is old info but seems to be pretty reliable.

The best way to find this answer is to contact Mental Health Customer Service through the patient's health plan. The answer to your question may differ depending on the insurance company, the plan (Medicare, PPO, POS, etc.), and the patient's employer. A referral, that has been generated from the insurance company, may be needed for mental health services. Usually, a mental health referral does not have to be initiated by the patient's primary care physician.

If you already know the name of the NP, you may be able to find your answer through him/her about which insurance companies cover his/her services.

My son sees a psych NP and it is covered by our insurance, BC/BS. She does assessments and manages his medication along with follow ups. This is not in NJ though. She is part of a practice with LSWs and a Psychiatrist.
