Do I need TED hose/support hose for long shifts?

Published

I hope this is not requesting medical advice. Today I worked my first double and when I got home my feet and ankles were swollen and aching. I am 22 and in good health. Is it important for people working on their feet to wear TEDs or support stockings? I have never seen someone my age wearing them unless they are a patient

Most nurses seem to prefer knee high stockings. If you have swelling that moves up to the knee are, then thigh high or pantyhose would be appropriate. I would recommend starting with a 15-20 mmHg compression. There are many that look just like athletic socks. Support hose or support socks should be washed after each wearing. They really do better if they are washed in the washer and dried in the drier on low. The socks are heat set and the heat of the dryer restores the memory of the yarn. If you decide you need or would prefer a thigh high garment, I would recommend the SIGVARIS, SOFT OPAQUE, 15-20 mmHg, Thigh High Closed Toe. These have a Sensinov grip band to keep the stocking up that is awesome. You can buy these at www.supporthosestore.com or call one of our Certified Fitters for assistance.
