Do I need a specialty NP degree?

Only one school in my area offers an Emergency Room Nurse Practitioner degree. The problem is the school is private and VERY VERY expensive. My question is, can I get a family nurse practitioner degree to work in the ER or no? I want to be able to give stitches and diagnose.

Most NPs I see in ER and ICU got an MSN through the Acute Care NP route

Thanks :) I'll see if I can find that program!

You can search on the NP forums here;

It depends on where you live. Around here FNPs work in the ERs. In other states FNPs cannot work in critical care or inpatient roles. Most places you can work in fast track with FNP which is the lower acuity side of the ER. You will do minor procedures and see minor illness. Stitches are definitely in this mix.
