Do I need a car?

Published

Hey there!

So I have just been accepted to CSUEB Nursing, and I am wondering if it is at all possible to get away with not having a car? I live in Oakland (near Highland) and have been taking public transportation to and from school for the last few years. My question then, is whether or not this is something that I can continue to get away with while in the nursing program, and/or if anyone who attends CSUEB Nursing has been able to do so without a car.

THANKS SO MUCH IN ADVANCE!!

I'm sure someone else will be able to answer this much better, but..

I know many of the clinicals start at 6:30am. Do buses/public transportation run early enough for you to get to clinical sites by then?

There's also the chance that another student will live near you and will carpool with you.

I don't have any personal experience with your school, but, in general, you will have to go to lots of different clinical sites over the time you're in nursing school. If you have good public transportation, that may be good enough (esp. since lots of the clinical sites will be hospitals, which are usually served by public transportation). Or, as jennafezz noted, you may be able to carpool at least some of the time. In my experience, carpooling is a v. frequent/common practice in nursing school, even for students who have their own cars (no point in driving a whole bunch of cars to the same clinical site, and they often have limited parking available for students). Or, you might occasionally take a cab to someplace (if it's just once in a while, that would be a lot more cost-effective than buying a car!)

However, be aware that you'll have to get to a lot of different places besides just your school campus ...

Thanks guys!

Jennafezz... I had no idea I would have to get to the sites so early, that actually makes a HUGE difference since, your right I don't think public transit runs that early.
