Hello everyone! I applied to two nursing programs. I was placed on the alternate list after applying to Augusta State for the second time. Nursing schools make it so hard to start your career and get it OVER with! The lastest I can hear something back from them will be August 20th. I have been trying to come up with something to get off the alternate list and into the nursing program. My friend told me it's all about who you know in the medical field. I'm starting to think I will have to go to that nursing department and kiss BUTT! What do you guys think?

You have to figure out how to stand out on paper. It's hard as hell to do, but that's the key. Be strong in your application letter. Be personable. Make them so curious to meet you that your 3.9 GPA will beat the 4.0s. (I was just throwing random numbers out there, but you get my point.) Find a way to mention something extraordinary about yourself, and make them want to know more. Seriously, these people are weeding through hundreds of applications and by the time they get to yours, their eyes are likely glossed over, they smell of day old caffeine, and all they want is to be done with it already. Learn to sell yourself on paper and you'll be in. It's good practice for submitting resumes for jobs, too.
As for knowing people in the medical field, I could be completely wrong about this, but I doubt the faculty at a college/university will give two hoots about the doctors you're pals with. It makes no difference to them.
That's just it....Augusta State University doesn't have interviews or require you to write an essay. They only require you to fill out the application O_o. I do not know of any other ways to stand out! HELP!!!
Include a letter, no more than a page long, that tells of how your life journey makes you awesome and ideal for entrance. Don't just write a nice letter-- create your own professional-looking letterhead. Go all out! And thank them warmly. Is there anything that you've done in your life that gets you praise and gratitude or that makes people more interested in knowing you? Use that! If you'd like, I can email you my letter. That thing kicked butt and got me admitted above others who had better GPAs than me (I know because as we were applying, 2 classmates of mine and I were comparing notes on each other. One didn't get accepted.). I'll send you one that I sent for a scholarship app and landed me an interview, too.
Yes please! I would love for you to send it to me! I will send you a message with my email thanks!

Having connections will work when you apply for jobs, not for going into nursing schools. It's a fair game for everyone. What is your GPA and other credentials?

The way I stood out, in my opinion, was firstly through my hard work, meaning my 4.0gpa and my ACT score. But, the way I tried to make this look better was by getting to know all my professors really well. I had two of my professors say they were going to talk to the nursing school staff about me. Then, I joined the Honors program to show how serious I was. That is included in my application info.
I agree that knowing people in the medical field won't help you get into nursing school. But, once you are in, it'll help you network for a job.
Success, you have mail! (Sorry, it's a bit lengthy! )
