Do you give OTC meds at Church?

Published

I work on the nurse ministry at church. Our lead nurse said we are allowed to give OTC medicine from our medicine cabinet to members 18 and over. I asked if this is okay since nurses are not allowed to dispense, she stated yes.

I'm still struggling with this. I will follow up with the BON but wanted to see if you all do this. Thanks.

This poses a fine line. What is the difference of the individual going to CVS or Walgreens and having the techs suggest something for them? Are you being asked to "diagnose" a problem and give the OTC or just provide it if they ask?

The BON states RNS can suggest an OTC medicine. However, it is not clear on whether we can administer. It saysRecommendations of an over-the-counter product does not encompass administration of the medication. Administration of the medication is governed by the policies and procedures of the practice setting.

I have OTC meds such as Ibuprophen, Acetaminophen, antacids, etc. available. However, if they ask for something, I ask them what they would prefer. I hand them the bottle and let them get their own meds, checking to see that they take an appropriate dose.

This is what I usually do. I know handing out OTC meds may seem so minute but I just don't want to take any chances.
