Just got hired to be a home Infusion RN (mostly high cost IVigG) and wasn't aware that they only pay mileage ($.58/mile) but no time to and from and between patient homes. I even have to take lab draws to a FedEx store and get a receipt...all on my time.
Reading different rules based on labor laws so its hard to understand (I'm in VA). I'm expected to cover a very large area and don't see much incentive. The per mile won't cover much considering I'm using my own car and it certainly doesn't cover my time driving all over a large area for $.58/ml.
The HR lady is out this week and the nurse that hired me didn't make it clear (I'm taking fault for this since I didn't directly ask, but its my first non-hospital job).
Please share your experience and thoughts. Really appreciate it ?

From the US Dept of Labor site. I would think this would also include your dropping off labs at FedEx. They're trying to screw you, don't let them.
Direct care workers who are employed by a third-party employer: Such an employee who travels from home to work and returns to his or her home at the end of the workday is engaged in ordinary home-to-work travel that is not compensable work time. However, travel from job site to job site during the workday, such as travel between several clients during the workday, is compensable hours worked. The third-party employer is responsible for ensuring that travel time from job site to job site is paid.

This information is over 25 years old, as I worked in HH as a visiting Nurse and Supervisor from 1993-96.
The Agency paid Nurses 33₵ per mile for the trip to the first visit, any related visits after that, including lab drop offs, etc. The agency did not reimburse for mileage from the last visit of the day to the Nurse's home.
For example, I would schedule my first visit as that which was the furthest, and my last as that which was the closest to my home. I remember one time traveling 50 miles to my first visit, but traveling only 6 miles to home after my last visit.
I figured the Nurses were making about $10/hr for driving. Hourly cases at that time were paying a good wage of $16.50/hr. Case opening visits paid $40 and regular visits paid $35.
Right Davey, that site also says that going to the first job and home from the last is not compensable time, as that's just normal for a job. Although in my last job if we got called in while we were on call we not only got paid time and a half but also got paid for 30 minutes for "travel time". Sweet deal.
