I'm pretty excited as this will be my first course on my path to becoming a nurse. I'm taking it online at AACC (my community college), but there is a lab on Thursday nights. Anyone else taking it this spring?
I ordered my texts online ( A LOT cheaper then in the bookstore by the way!) and have started to look over my lab manual. The first section is about measurement and significant numbers. I'm kind of going over and over something about expressing figures in exponential form to get rid of ambiguity about the significance of zeros after an integer, like in 200. Its a little confusing, but I'll figure it out.

I'm not taking General Chemistry until next Fall, but I just completed an Intro to Chem class online this Fall semester. I have a better understanding of Chem now. Significant Figures isn't too bad to understand as long as you follow the rules. Numbers like 200 and 100 is ambigious and should be represented using scientific notation
200= 2.0X10^2
100=1.0X10^2
Hope this helps!

I'm taking it online too via ccconline. I picked up Chemistry for Dummies, An Intro to Chemistry for Bio Students (a required textbook in my AP class) as well as CliffsStudySolver - Chemistry. I am working my way through them before the class starts. I highly recommend the StudySolver book. It tells you what it is (ie. significant figures) and then gives you a couple example with answers, then some questions for you to figure out and gives the answers later, and its only $15.00.
Sig figures:
2.054, there are 4
0.00399, there are 3
0.99800, there are 5
BTW, the StudySolver text says there are 6 rules to figuring out how to count significant figures.

Count me in once again...I am going to be taking my THIRD Chemistry class starting January 12th. I have taken Basic (with lab) and the first semester of Intro to General, Organic and BioChemistry (with lab) so far. This class is mainly organic and Biochem which I hear from some is easier and some say it is harder. I think it will be easier because there is less math but this does not mean I am going to study any less hard.
I HIGHLY reccommend the Cliff Study Solver as well as Homework Helpers Chemistry book also. I found both of them to be quite helpful (I have gotten A/A and an A-/A so far.)
bump! There's got to be more of us!

May I suggest also signing up for a chem lecture class also?
I attempted an online Chem 111 at AACC last year and dropped the first week. It was simpy too overwhelming online (an incredible amount of material) and had been too many years since I had seen this stuff. If you have the Chem lecture as a back up you can jump into it, if need be. If you don't sign up eary, you won't find space closer to the beginning of classes.
Just a consideration :)

Do you mean like auditing a lecture?
No, I meant to sign up for both-online and lecture. You can drop either in the initial drop/add period for a full refund. That way, if you decide (like I did) that the online Chem was not working out, you can switch to the lecture class and not miss out on an entire semester. The Chem lecture classes tend to fill up closer to the beginning of classes and you may not be allowed to add it closer to Jan 20.
It's really only a suggestion, IF you have the ability to make an on campus Chem lecture happen. I took Micro, A&P1 & 2 in the evening format and really enjoyed the experiance.
Either way, congrat's on making it happen and best wishes!
