hi! uhm, i am a nurse from the philippines and i just want to know the stand of the regional health authorities/hospitals in manitoba regarding dnr orders. ive been trying to google it, but i found some inconsistencies about policies, practice and guidelines.. i just had an interview, and i was asked "as a new nurse in the unit who have just finished orientation, and you were the only rn at the moment, what will you do if a patient suddenly had a heart attack?" (something like that) and i answered "i will look for any dnr order in the chart first and if there's none i would proceed to what a prudent nurse would do.." and started to enumerate my actions in detail... i was just wondering if my answer was to some extent admissible taking into consideration my initial response was to check the chart. hoping for some factual views and honest tips on how to go about such questions.

Maybe that wasn't an ethics question but a clinical question? Someone having an MI hasn't coded - yet - and gets treatment, O2 and prescribed or protocol meds, and the MD paged stat.
And if you're the only nurse, you should have found out in report who is DNR, not be looking it up while time is ticking on. Do the pts wear coded bracelets in Manitoba?

i bet you're right about that not being an ethics question.. i, due to extreme nervousness maybe and wanting to be thorough , might had overly rationalized my answer to the question while forming it in my mind... i forgot to tell that the patient was on vfib.. but still you have the point. i should have found out during reports about the dnr.. thanks for pointing that out.. never really came in my mind.. im not yet in mannitoba, just attended an interview for a job offer in canada... im just not so sure on how to go about those kind of situations because we do not exercise it here in the philippines.. just based my answer thru what ive learned during my nclex review.. i am not really aware if they wear coded bracelets, but i read in some articles that they put dnr orders infront of the chart or at the first page of the chart rather.. thanks..
