I was told by the admissions director of the school of nursing where i want to go to school that I wouldnt get accepted for fall 2005 because i didnt have a chemistry with a lab... So, the other day I found out this girl got accepted to the same school and she didnt have any algebra or chemistry at all and she got accepted... :angryfire It doesnt make sense....
I could use some encouragement.......
Where I am coming from is that Nursing School curriculum are not rubber stamps. They are not the same. Some schoos, like mine, accept students directly into nursing as freshmen students and offer a few introductory nursing courses at that level so students can decide if they want to be nurses before they spend more time and money in the University system. Other nursing schools do not accept students into the nursing major until the beginning of the junior year. These are BSN programs. Still others -- ADN and diploma schools may be set up that a number of pre-requisite courses must be completed successfully before they will consider students for admission to their programs.
As I said in the title: Not all nursing schools are created equal. Every school has slightly different acceptance and progression rules.
Making allowances may happen, but if you could substantiate it, you would have a case against the school. There are certain regulating bodies in each state -- the State Board of Nursing-- that set up rules for accreditation and acceptance into a nurisng program. These are generally high school pre-requisites. Not all states have these rules. However, the school may require similar courses at high school or at the college level before they accept you.
I can see that it makes perfect sense. If I had to choose who to admit and I had a student with no high school chemistry or a low grade in a chemistry course and another student with a good grade in an honors or advanced placement chemistry -- I'll take the one with the advanced placement first -- she/he has a higher chance of doing well in the curriculum because of their science background.
I disagree with your statement " You really don't have much to say with the powers that be." Ask to see their admission requirements. They must have them and they must follow them. Granted someone created them, and you did not have a say in that. However, the criteria is the same for everyone.
It sounds to me like you are making a comparison between apples and oranges.
I can only be second guessing your school admissions rules. You need to contact them and go over them. Sometimes you only hear what you want to. Every applicant must have a chemistry pre-requisite.

If someone else got in without the prereqs, that might look unfair, but it could be that it's unfair to HER. I can't imagine trying to take A&P or microbiology without having the chemistry knowledge to make sense of it all.Miranda
Well said! That's what went through my mind when I read this post.

Im very sorry this happened to you. Something similar happened to me recently. I was trying to go to Barry Univ. NS and they said that they werent accepting any application for the Fall of 2005. The day after im talking to this girl in my anatomy class and babbling on and on about how she just got accepted to Barry that week. Im standing there all puzzled and ask her how she got accepted. She didnt want to tell me so I asked her friend and she told me that it was because she sis volunteer work there for the Dean or something. Well like someone else above said everything happens for a reason because I applied and anyways. I didnt get in for the fall but I did get accepted for their Accelerated program starting in January '06 just 3 months later !!!!:) YAY for me!!!! So see now instead of being in NS for 2 years ill only be there for 15 months! I didnt let that experience discourage me from applying there and you should not either. I do however strongly advise you to finish your pre-reqs before applying to more NS because I did get rejected from one NS because my pre-reqs were not completed. Also some NS once they reject you, you cant reapply. Good Luck to you
