Hi,
I'm currently going to college right now, and it will be my third year in college starting Fall 2012. I am studying Feminist Studies, with a concentration in science, technology, and medicine. I am highly interested in women's health and midwifery. Recently, I did some research on msn programs and direct entry programs. I am aware that there are pre reqs that I'm going to have to take in order for me to enter these programs. For example, in order for me to take microbiology to complete that specific pre req, if I take it now while I'm working on my BA, I will have to start from the bottom, which will begin with chemistry, then biology, then microbiology; same with anatomy/physio. So right now, I'm thinking about doing my pre reqs after I earn my BA. What do you think about that? I've been reading several different answers about msn programs and direct entry programs. Can you clarify what each program is? So will I not have to take my pre reqs first before I apply to direct entry programs?
I would really love to get some advice on this. Although I'm only going to be in my third year of college, I think it's never too early to plan for graduate school, and future goals/plans. I appreciate any help that I can get. Thank you so much!

Direct entry programs are generally programs than combine BSN equivalent coursework along with MSN coursework to grant an MSN degree. Some aren' advanced practice nurse degrees but qualify you to be an RN(similar to ADN/BSN). They often require or 'highly encourage' experience. I haven't seen any that don't require pre-reqs prior to starting the program. You also can look into BSN and 2nd degree BSN programs which you could do a MSN program afterwards.

Direct Entry programs are for people who wanted to get their masters in a nursing specialty but currently don't hold a nursing degree. In order to be accepted into a direct entry program you need to hold a BS or BA in a field other than nursing. MSN programs are usually for people who already hold a BSN.
If I were you, I would finish up your degree and then take your prereqs somewhere cheaper (like a community college). Most schools will take grades from anywhere, as long as it is an accredited institution so it really isn't worth it to take your prereqs at a more expensive school if you can avoid it.
Have you thought about accelerated programs or 2nd degree programs? I also started looking into direct entry programs but I realized I would probably rather become a nurse, gain some experience and then go for my masters if I decide that's what I want after I've been working as an RN for a while. I also find it hard to believe that most direct entry programs want us to know what we want to specialize in before we even are admitted into the program! But that's just my 2 cents =)
Either way, good luck! I'm sure you'll find something that works for you.
