Direct Entry Programs- How hard to get in?

Published

Thanks for all of your responses to all of my previous posts. As you probably assume, I'm evaluating all of my options including ADN, BSN, and Direct-Entry MSN. The direct entry programs look extremely appealing, but seeing that they are at the best of colleges, I don't know how easy they are to get in.

Does anyone know what the typical GPA, scores, acceptance rates of these programs are? Anyone have any experience applying?

I'm in MD, so I'd consider Hopkins, but Columbia, MGHI in Mass, Case Western, Vanderbilt, Pace, and Yale also look appealing.

Seeing as nursing traditionally isn't an "ivy league" profession, are the credentials required for these programs less than what a typical "ivy" student would need?

I'd love to hear experiences with any programs.........

Thank you SO much, I hope you're there with me in June!

Don't panic yet, the mail can definitely take an extra day. Bummer that it's Saturday and you have to wait until Monday though.

I live in San Francisco, so I get mail the very next day. I'm sure they mailed ALL notifications on Friday. I'm going to be a Perinatal Clinical Nurse Specialist. Did you meet anyone in my specialty on the interview day? I didn't. I interviewed on Jan 21st, you? What speciality did you apply for?

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

-Emily

Hi Emily,

Thank goodness they mailed ALL notifications on Friday. As soon as I heard you got yours and realized that I didn't get mine, I thought, oh no I'm out. I swear, I have done so much second guessing since the interviews. :uhoh3:

I interviewed on the 14th and talked to as many of the applicants as I could, but I didn't meet any Perinatal CNSs. The majority of people I met were applying for Pediatric NP, Midwifery, Psych NP and Family NP. I applied for Gerontological NP and met 5 other Gerontological NP applicants that day.

All of the applicants were incredible, so it's really an accomplishment to get in. You must be so proud, happy and ready to celebrate.

I live in Burlingame, so hopefully I'll hear something Mon or Tues. I'll definitely be chasing the mailman through the neighborhood again.

Thanks so much for giving us all the heads up on the offer letters, and I hope to see you at UCSF this summer, but if I don't make it, congratulations again and Good Luck!

Hi Jess,

I'm happy to share. ...

I did apply to UCSF last year and didn't even get an interview. They highly recommended applying again. So don't lose hope, the second time can be a charm.

Thanks Emily for sharing! That is great to know that you were successful this year re-applying! I think it really shows the schools you are serious when you re-apply. Can I ask- did you re-write your application this year or just write a letter or something and re-activate it? I have a friend who didn't get in last year- so he spent the year finishing pre reqs and sent his new grades and a letter to the schools, but kept the old essays that were in his original apps. I think if I had been in his shoes I may have re-written the essays- but I don't know- any thoughts?

Again- congrats! I'm so happy to see your happy post- hopefully we will have many more in the weeks to come!

Hi everyone, I live in SF and received my letter from UCSF today also. I'm alternate #1 for the Acute Care NP specialty. So I'll continue to wait patiently. Does anyone know of any experiences of being an alternate. My envelope was thin also. Good luck to everyone!

Fingers crossed for you! I don't know anything about being accepted as an alternate- but I'm sending good thoughts and wishes your way!

What's up with all these thin envelopes?!?! Don't the schools know they should be big... or at least thick?!! :chuckle

Congratulations Emily, and also to Olijam for being an alternate at UCSF. Wow! Seahorse, I hope that letter comes on Monday for you.

I was at Anatomy lab all afternoon studying for two midterms and look what happened while I was away!

We're all getting down to the wire here. Jess, I'm glad you e-mailed MGH, I hope they send you back some news. Thanks for sharing everyone.

Vanderbilt told me a while back they would be mailing their letters on 2/28/05 or week of (I cannot now remember which). My heart is definitely doing the flip-flop every time I go to the mailbox, too.

It's hard to concentrate on the exam I have on Monday and the other one on Friday (both anatomy, one for lecture and one for lab) and they're both going to be incredibly hard!

Good evening, all... :biggringi

Oh Lord, why did I have to check this forum tonight? Now I know that UCSF letters have been sent out and I have to bite my nails until they arrive.

With regard to the Boston area schools, I was looking at Northeastern and BC, and when I visited the campus my mind was made up for me: BC just didn't give me a good vibe, while Northeastern seemed professional, dedicated, and accomodating.

I haven't heard anyone on this thread talk about Vanderbilt but me, but just in case there's anyone reading out there, I just read on another thread that someone got an acceptance letter into their CNM program and it was posted on 2/24/05. I know they have a "rolling admissions" process, and so I have no idea when this person applied, nor do I know where she lives so the mail could vary.

I just wrote her a personal e-mail since the thread she was on is closed, asking her when she applied and what state she lives in. Hope to hear from her. My blood pressure is rising! :uhoh3:

Hi Jess,

I'm happy to share. I graduated in 2001 from Penn in Philadelphia with just under a 3.4 GPA. I took the GREs back when the analytical section was still there. I got a 650 Verbal, 710 Math, 750 Analytical.

Since graduation I've been working in business at a Security company. I manage a number of accounts where we provide Security Officers, and have a pretty large team of employees reporting to me. I think the management experience was definitely a plus, especially going into advanced practice nursing.

Last year I volunteered at UCSF in the Birth Center and Well Baby nursery. This year I volunteer at another hospital in a perinatal department. The supervisor is amazing and she has helped me get pretty involved. I've been participating with the hospital's breastfeeding committee which has been a great learning experience. It determines BF policy and recommendations for the hospital.

I did apply to UCSF last year and didn't even get an interview. They highly recommended applying again. So don't lose hope, the second time can be a charm.

My other recommendation would be to reexamine your choice of specialties. Keep in mind that midwifery and NP specialties are the most cut throat.

Best of luck!

Emily

Congratulations Emily! I'm really happy for you! In your acceptance letter, what date did they give you to accept by? That would help olijam who is on the waiting list as an alternate. I imagine I'll hear from some of my other colleagues this week!

Good luck to you too CAG1234! I hope you hear from Vanderbilt soon :) These last few days of waiting are the hardest. I hope we'll all be celebrating soon. :balloons:

Aaack! Another one with a bad BC vibe! What is up with that? How can it be ranked so highly with a faculty culture that plays so poorly to prospective students?!

Actually, I can see that happening. UCSF was really aloof and knew they had the #2 spot for MEPN programs. They did not really care about catering to the students because they knew the demand would be so great. I suspect the same thing may be going on at BC! But remember, you only have a small data sample. They may have been more friendly toward others; perhaps the people you interacted with were not in the best mood... who knows? It just goes back to the "vibe". I'll keep my fingers crossed for all your guys!

The acceptance letter was a single page and didn't say anything more than congrats, you're in, we'll give you more info in March. I would imagine that they will require a deposit by the end of March. I remember on the interview day, they said that if you haven't gotten off the wait list by early May than there isn't much hope.

Olijam, I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. At least you're first on the waiting list. I'm sure there'll be at least ONE person who chooses a different program.
