just moving the other thread to its new home. Here's where we talk about issues unique to Master's-entry programs!
Hi,
Newbie here, pretty intense forum. I've applied to a few
fast-lane schools but still not sure which one would be
ideal for me. I'm >40 and independent.
Does anyone know about Johns Hopkins ABSN (13Mo) grade
policy? Two C's are out? Two D's are out? Out of 90-100
on Hopkins and 30-40 in DePaul, how many did not make
it through in recent years? Would it be wise to go to a
school that does not kick out students? Are there schools
like that out there? In my opinion, passing NCLEX and getting
good school grades are two different things.
Thanks.
Amitai.

most of the accelerated programs try to keep you there. for my program 70% is passing and you need to pass every class (and the thing that is a problem for some people is that you need a 3.0 average to keep your scholarship). you may not need straight a's to pass the NCLEX but you definitely need to have mastered the material enough to pass the class. whichever school accepts you does so because they think you can succeed and they certainly don't accept people that they think are going to fail (makes them look bad). So be confident that if accepted to these 2 programs you are capable of doing well.
A lot of us in my program are in our early to mid 20s. I'm 24, but we have a few people who just graduated college in the spring.Things are fine with the move and studying, but one of my meds is making me, um, lactate. It's a little freaky. Apparently it raises your prolactin hormone levels. It should be fine, I'm seeing the doctor first thing monday. I might have to get an MRI of my brain, though, because it can be related to a pituitary tumor. (The pituitary is what releases prolactin) Wish me luck, k?
Eeee gads! I'm so sorry you are having such a weird side effect from your meds. Prolactin is supposed be a "feel good" hormone. I did feel more relaxed while sitting down to nurse my girls, but when I weaned I had a really hard time with what I guess was essentially prolactin withdrawal. Nausea, headaches- the whole nine. Yuk. I hope that your docs can tweak your meds to still be theraputic without the extra Hang in there!

I totally agree with bruinlaura. These accelerated and direct entry programs aren't about to flunk large numbers of students and make thier selections process look bad. If you can get in with their crazy acceptance ratios, you will likely do just fine. I have heard of more weed out practices at the community college level with ADN programs. I think in general ADN programs may accept a higher percentage of candidates but also have much higher attrition rates because they are not as selective in their application proccess.

Hi,That has got to be an inconvenience, (to say the least Elizabels). If it is from the meds raising the prolactin levels will they change to another med or just try to treat the lactation?
Argh, like you need to have anything at all to distract you from your studies!
Good luck honey, I hope that all is well!!

Gen,
How are you? I'm sorry I didn't have a chance to respond to your posts about your husband, housing, etc. I hope things are more on an even keel now. I absolutely think you are making the right decision to live at school. You will need an amazing amount of focus while in your program and I think while it will be hard, it will be easier on both of you for you to be at school while at school and be at home when at home, you know?
Hope all is well,
Jess
Hang in there, all you Columbians!! And you too Smile, down at JH!Do you guys get a break before Fall term?

We get a month off! I'm going back to cali for 2.5 weeks and I have a list of things I need to eat starting with
1. things made in a kitchen (my mom's to be precise) No microwaves allowed.
2. tacos, enchiladas, tamales, etc
3. fresh produce (who knew outside of cali the fresh produce was so lame)
oh and while I am it (procrastinating packing and studying for pharm, that is) my clinical instructor told me today that my careplan was the best she's seen all summer and that I have excellent history and physical assessment skills. It felt so good to hear that after a fairly stressful and insane week. Still too early to call my mom but rest assured I will (i'm one of those people that still put's A's on the fridge, my college roommates thought I was crazy:chuckle ).
Oh, and yesterday I signed the lease for my apartment! I'm so glad to know that when I come back I won't have to sleep (my story would be that I was pulling an all nighter) in the study lounge.
Ok I need to get cracking. No more monkey business. Take care everyone.
one . . . more . . . final . . .gasp...
Hi Elizabells,
Same goes for me! I have one more final tomorrow! I cannot wait. Then I have a month off before the fall semester. It's flown by quickly. I'm heaind to Seattle and California for the break. It will be a definitely deserved vacation. These accelerated classes are killer!
Please wish me luck and positive karma!

Thanks, Jess and BruinLaura,
I just don't think it's ethical to have classmates
competing and backstabbing each other to pass
the tough and stressful classes. It seems that
a lot of times those who 'use every means' possible to
get A's or to pass, DO pass. And those who try to
be nice to everybody and yield to others
seem to get behind. I think once students get in
these tough programs, everyone including faculties
should try their best to help each other to pass the
program. I would.

Hi guys!
How is everyone doing? Sorry I haven't been around much- I'm in the home stretch of my Micro class and then we are going to Hawaii for 10 days before school starts - yippee!
I got the neatest thing from BC yesterday in the mail. It was a letter from the Graduate Nurses Association at BC with a face sheet and bios of the Direct Entry class that started last year and a booklet with "Words of Wisdom" and advice from the soon to be second years. It was neat to read the backgrounds and ages of the students in the face sheet and then to take in all the advice that they had to offer. For the first time, I really feel connected to my school and I'm beginning to think it may be a somewhat friendly place after all! Most of the students (the ones who gave their ages anyway) were in their mid 20s. They all seemed terribly impressive and all that- but I just though it was such a friendly, helpful thing to do to pass on what they have learned to us who are freaking out right about now. :chuckle I am definitely going to try to "pay it forward" to the class under me once I'm a second-year.
I've got one more week for Micro. Man, I hate this class! I can't wait for it to be over and be sipping a pineapple juice on the beach!
