Direct Entry MSN Programs 2013

Nursing Students Post Graduate

Published

Anyone on here applying to direct entry MSN programs that begin in summer or fall of 2013? I think I have finalized my list of programs to apply to, and I am beginning to get everything together to start applying this summer/early fall (I know this is rather early, but I'm a bit anxious and I was wondering if there was anyone else on this board who is just as excited as me!). I am pretty certain that I will be applying to UPenn, Yale, Johns Hopkins, Northeastern, University of Massachusetts, Boston College, Columbia, Vanderbilt, and Marquette. I am also applying to a few accelerated BSN programs in my state (Florida) - UCF and UF, for sure. I have all of my prerequisite courses completed, and currently have a 3.76, but my BS is still in progress and I have to retake the GRE this summer. I look forward to hearing from other people!

the healers art--- your GPA and GRE are awesome and ur CNA and your applying to ABSN and CNL i am SURE youll be fineeeee.

hopeful- i feel your passion about your experiences from your paragraph right here so i can only imagine how passionate your essays were. I am sure you had trouble with the 2 page limit lol! its so hard describing all of our great experiences and how they relate to nursing and why we want to be advance practice nurses.

i really hope we all get into the schools we want to go and the ones that fit us best!!!

I just hope that I've done enough to get in somewhere! We shall see! I hope we all get into the best places for us as well.

hopefulnurse24,

which programs are you applying to? you seem like you will be a great candidate and i wish you luck!!!

Whoops. I guess I'm not applying to BC anymore!

I had already written my essay and everything but realized too late that they want you to mail in the essay instead of putting it online. It's due Nov 1st so in theory I have some time to get it there in time but I work Monday-Wednesday from 6am-6pm and the post office is already closed now. :/ Saves me application money I guess?

I also decided to take Yale off my list. It's only Pediatric primary care and it doesn't give me a BSN and it's an expensive application. It doesn't seem worth it.

Also I decided to take Ethics online next semester (for Georgetown). Do I need to report this to my other schools? Or should I wait until I am actually enrolled or until the course is completed? I don't have a transcript from the school yet because registration doesn't start until November 5th.

adt, that is very nice of you. I wish you luck, as well! For now, I am applying to Duke, JHU, Northeastern, Marquette and Penn. I am also considering applying to my school's ABSN program. Where will you be applying?

the healer's art, I don't think that you would need to report taking Ethics to your school right now if you'll be enrolled in the spring, and it isn't a prerequisite for all of your schools that you're currently enrolled in right now. At this point, I would say you would only need to send a transcript in after you've completed the course... but I could be wrong. The safest thing to do is ask someone by making a phone call, but I really don't foresee it being an issue seeing as how it won't affect anything and you'll be taking it next semester, when they will have already accepted you.

I also just realized how lengthy my post was, the one a page back... wow, if you made it through that, I give you major props. Sorry for such a long post! I'm mildly verbose...

Hey healer's art! I was going to send a hard copy of my personal statement too, but I saw there is the option of submitting it online. That's what I ended up doing... do you know if the school has a specific preference? Or are they mandating this? =\

And how important is it to receive a BSN with all of the master's degrees? Because I know Marquette only gives an RN-MSN degree...and the RN degree is only good for Wisconsin.

the healer's art, kdiem.. I had already mailed my personal statement in before I completed the online application so I e-mailed BC and they didn't seem to have a preference. I would just submit it online especially if you have in completed in already and e-mail [email protected] to make sure everything is in order, she was very helpful.

kdiem, I'm not sure about the importance of the BSN degree if you are working as an NP, to be honest. I know that an RN degree is fine in most places to work as a nurse, but I do know some cities prefer the BSN along with MSN. I know for a fact at Duke Hospital in NC that they require a BSN and MSN in order to obtain a job as an NP. I don't know how much it matters in other places, though. And when they say the RN degree is only good in Wisconsin, that's because I think wherever you sit for NCLEX is where you become licensed, and in order to be a nurse in another state you contact their board of nursing, typically. I could be very wrong, but this was the understanding that I was under.

Hi folks,

A few of you have mentioned back-up schools. I'm not sure this counts but I came across a program at East Carolina University in Greenville, NC. I'm thinking of applying, partly because I have family in NC. I really don't know anything about the quality of the program but they have a bunch of NP options, including Nurse Midwife. (My preference is Gerontology, which they don't have but I would do Adult NP.)

Their pre-reqs are normal except for Ethics. They do say, though, that you can complete pre-reqs before enrollment so presumably if you, like me, don't have Ethics, you could take it in spring or summer. The deadline is Dec. 1.

I'm struggling with deciding about applying to an out-of-state (CA) NP program. As I dither, the deadlines pass. Argh. I did apply to UCSF, as I mentioned, and I'm applying to other in-state BSN programs. Like you, though, I would love to be an NP and I have a BA in Biology.

Oh I did not see a place on the application to upload the personal statement. But it's on the " Web Application Status Check". Good thing I post here and found that out. Whew! Okay BC is back on the list.

Kdiem, if you want to work part time before you get your masters it's best to have a BSN. It's also nice to have a BSN in case something happens and you can't continue on with the master's portion so I favor programs that give you a BSN. But BC's program is so short that it doesn't bother me to not have the BSN. I think that if you drop out of the program early your RN is only good in Wisconsin because you don't have a degree to go along with it? But don't hold me to that.

I am applying to UVA (MSN-CNL), Columbia (BSN/MSN-NP), Boston College (MSN-NP) Johns Hopkins (BSN/MSN-CNS), Northeastern (BSN/MSN), MGH (BSN/MSN-NP), Duke (ABSN but they have ED for the MSN-NP portion), Georgetown (ABSN). And possibly UMass-Boston and University of Cincinnati later on depending on how the others go.

Anyone applying to Vanderbilt reach the 4.5 Analytical Writing Score?? Wondering if not reaching it is a major deal for them. I know it's rolling and holistic which is an advantage. Sending in Yale's application tonight.

Hey Morgan... I'm applying to Vanderbilt (submitted my app last week!) and I met the 4.5 writing score... but I am on the fence with the math/verbal score... When I emailed them about that part of the scores...they actually suggested I retake the test again. But I didn't feel like I would do that well another try since I was getting ready to attack 13 applications and working full time. And I didn't know Vanderbilt was a rolling admissions school?... :o

Anyone applying to Emory? I totally misread the priority deadline for December 15th instead of December 1st, so I scheduled my TEAs exam for November 30th. I did this way back in August too when there were options available! I won't actually get my scores until 48-72 hours after the test :( Emory does allow the TEAs scores to be sent via email+scan but... that means I would miss the deadline if they are very strict on receiving EVERYTHING by December 1st. I'm going to call them tomorrow but just wanted to see if anyone else took the TEAs out there..
