I am looking into schools for direct entry midwifery.... Does anyone have any recommendations? Deciding factors might be Cost, Location (i am in CA) online availability and intensity of program. also, I am an active Christian so I would like to find one that aligns as best as possible with my beliefs. Thank you for any help.

I'm really late to this conversation so I hope you're not still looking but if you are there is a school in San Diego and surrounding metropolitan areas...or can I sum that up with SoCal?! Anyway it's called Nizhoni Institute of Midwifery...

They can be found at midwiferyatnizhoni.org

:jester: I hope your journey is blessed!

Just my two cents- I graduated from a direct entry midwifery program in 2006. I am now just about to finish my ASN and I am going back from my CNM next year. At least half my graduating class went back to school for their CNM within a matter of years. The legalities and logistics of being a DEM make it very, very difficult to practice SAFELY and to actually make a living. There are very few states where DEMs are properly integrated into the health care system, and the educational requirements are not standardized, which makes quality control very difficult.

I loved being a home birth midwife (and hope to get back into it sooner than later!), but if I could do it all over again I would absolutely get my CNM first. The home birth experience you get in a direct entry school is absolutely invaluable, but a DEM education is very, very limiting in terms of job opportunity.
