Direct entry and graduate entry programs II

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hello all,

Its been mentioned before about ending our thread and starting a new one. Think it was tried a few months ago.

Maybe it is time now, seeing as the thread is 72 pages long. That is sort of hard for a new reader to sift through to see where we are now, don't you agree?

Thanks Elizabells,

I guess the roller coaster that I am electing to be on regarding the program and its start will stop when there is a signed acceptance letter in the picture. :)

Another student from the IL forum had been going through this same situation even though her application was sent in time for early consideration for the fall. Her t-scripts were also in the wrong location and her acceptance was finally announced only last week. I thought maybe it was a fluke or something but, now this?

What gets me is that I had two emails confirming that I was good for the winter start, yet, when I called to double check the t-script eval for the final ones that I mailed in they cannot be found, (regardless of the ones that I drove an hour to hand deliver, and an hour back, that I was told to do which was a waste anyhow!)

So, ugh and sigh and wait and see. Meanwhile debating the cosmos.. :)

p.s. I know you must be so busy studying and everything! Good for you guys, yippie! nap and rest whenever you can

soontobenp,

I'm a new member too- so can't address your specific questions, but had to reply anyways. When I read your post I almost did a double take- it looks exactly like something I would write, except that you have a lot more healthcare experience than I do! Same thing- I got my BA in Environmental Studies and am now working in that field, but want to do a career switch to international healthcare (and domestic community health) and am looking to become a Family Nurse Practioner via a Masters Entry Program... :)

I'm applying for Summer 2006 entry at John Hopkins, which offers an accelerated BSN to MSN program- so you end up with both degrees, which may be an asset with non-traditional employers (i.e. not just hospitals, but also clinics, non-profits, federal orgs specifically focused on international care). They also have a good reputation for community health, and I've been talking with some of the profesors about their international outreach programs. Also the schools you already mentioned- UCSF, Columbia, etc.. Yale and UW also have direct MSN's. I've mainly been looking on the West Coast and Northeast for personal reasons, so I'm sure there's alot of great programs in the midwest and elsewhere too- there's a ton of existing forums and threads if you search.

Like other posters have said, FNP is actually a pretty good 'generalist specialist' degree for what it sounds like you want to do- in the sense that it means you can work with the entire population. Your paid clinic expereince sounds like a very strong asset, I definitely wouldn't worry about the "volunteer" classification. Its healthcare, paid or not.

Have you already done your prereqs? When are you applying? Sorry for the long post, just wanted to say hi and best of luck. Let me know if you learn more about international-specific stuff!

Hello all,

My apologies if this has been posted already...I am a new member, and haven't had a chance to sift through all 72 pages of the thread yet. I am interested in applying for Master's Entry programs and becoming a Family Nurse Practitioner. I have a number of questions, and any suggestions or thoughts would be much appreciated.

~ I completed my BA in Environmental Studies, but did not have a GPA (we received narrative evaluations) and my undergrad school does not calculate GPAs. Has anyone been in a similar situation?

~ I have found only a few Master's entry programs--UCSF, Columbia, UNH, McGill. Are there others?

~ I work two full-time jobs, so have little time for volunteering. However, one of my jobs is in a mostly low-income medical clinic. Will my lack of volunteerism adversely affect my applications?

~ Does anyone have any experience with international nursing? I would like to go into this (to work with organizations like Doctors Without Borders, or similar) field, and am wondering if Family NP is too general for this type of work.

~ Also, I am thinking of applying to McGill, and am wondering if anyone knows of their program, and whether persons receiving their NP in Canada may practice in the US; and, if not, what might the licensure process be like?

Whew. Thanks for reading all of this! I look forward to any help you may be able to offer. Thanks again.

Hi Rasmin,

Glad you are going to apply to Hopkins! That's the program I'm in. It's a very fast intense program, but I like what I'm learning. Plus, with the BSN you can apply to other schools for the MSN and have the advantage of a BSN/RN degree. And yes, I'm doing the Driect entry to FNP too! :p

Today I got emails from DePaul's Admissions Coordinator and their Department Chair.

I am grateful for all the advice and communication from everyone here.

What a roller coaster of decisions I have been, maybe this, maybe that.

You are all correct in the advice to stick with it and follow through on your application and to just go on and talk to the people who can make the decisions.

I felt like I did plead my case and push it and follow through, (while trying to be non-pushy or urgent or naggy or anything less than understanding!)

Off to being busy, like you all, very busy. :)
