Published

Hello everyone,

I am a first year nursing and midwifery student and need help understanding the aetiology and underlyingpathophysiology of lower back and pelvic pain (LBPP) during pregnancy. I am confused as to what the difference between aetiology and pathophysiology is in relation to LBPP during pregnancy.

Thank you kindly for your help!

We are happy to help....but we need to know what your research HAS REVEALED TO YOU FIRST.

Causes of back and pelvic pain during pregnancy include weight gain, the hormone relaxin, stress, posture changes as the fetus grows. The hormone relaxin is secreted during pregnacy in preparation for the birth and makes the muscles around lower back and pelvic region to relax.

Pathophys: When the muscles around lower back and pelvic region relax it allows the weight of the growing fetus to pinch on the surrounding nerves causing nerve irritation, and thus, pain.
