I have a pt that is on ivpb ABT she is to get 100ml over 60 min. i set it up hung it and set the rate. about 30 mins later the iv pump says autostart and it stopped flowing. there was fluid still in the bag. did i do something wrong? why did it say autostart. this is a baxter flogard pump.

Thanks!

...We used to use that pump...this is how that feature works......Autorestart is a feature that your hospital has decided that it will allow....if that feature is enabled it will display that during the power up checking process (when you turn it on). You can have a set number of auto restarts for a power up...we used to have 10. This feature will let the pump restart if there is a downstream occlusion...THAT YOU HAVE or the patient has relieved....so if the IV is in the ACF and the pts bends their arm and it occludes and then they straighten their arm and it relieves the Downstream occlusion (pump down ..upstream is above the pump) and the pump will then continue the infusion as you have PROGRMAMMED IT TO DO. When you reach your maximum allowable number the feature will no longer work and will continue to alarm for those downstream occlusions. So your infusion should have kept going.if you had not reached your number..BUT what you should have done is try to fgure out why it had a downstream occlusion...was tubing pinched..is the catheter pinched...is it at an area of flexion..try to identify and fix the problem. If you set your medication at 100 ml per hour and you wnated to infuse 100 ml..then it will just keep infusing until it is done....you could have set it up as a primary or secondary on this pump...Central and or Biomed should know how many auto resarts you get ....this is a common feature in many pumps

Thank you so much. i do remember the pump was saying down occlusion but i didn't know what that autorestart meant. thanks for clearing that up for me.
