Did I ruin my chances of getting into Nursing School?

Published

I am a student in Virginia Beach at Tidewater Community College. Last semester I had a ton of personal issues: my aunt passes away, my mother had to file chapter 13, my boyfriend got a dui... the list goes on and on! I was under so much stress, and I pretty much got C's in all of my classes. I am devestated! I got a C in my Anatomy and Physiology 2 class, but I did get an A in my A&P 1 class, if it even matters. On the fact sheet about the nursing program, it says that to apply, you have to have a minimum grade of a "C", which I do have... but I am afraid that I have blown it! Am I worried about nothing? Acceptance letters come out in June/July, or so I hear... if I am not accepted will they still send me a letter telling me why I am not accepted? I have all A's and B's in all the other classes required to take before the application process. I just couldn't take not hearing back from them. I am so stressed out!

First, take a deep breath and relax. You STILL have a chance.

It will help you a lot that, despite your one and only C, you still have a competitive GPA.

One measly C grade may not mean anything to the nursing school. They take a look at other stuff, like your extracurricular activities, how well of a student you are overall. Certainly if you are getting better grades in most of your other classes, that still means something.

I had A's & B's for all my pre-reqs for nursing, and a C in microbiology. Even with a C, I applied fall semester, and re-took microbiology spring semester. Found out spring semester (while re-taking micro) that I got accepted. I completed micro the 2nd time with a B+.

If you don't get in for this year, re-take the class, and apply again. Don't lose hope!

Pack it up and go to the Philippines and get your BSN over there

It will only cost around 5,000 for 4 years of school

And the cost of living is unreal, You can easily live good on $150 per month there, and nursing schools all over the place.

Specializes in ICU.

You certainly have a good enough gpa for some schools, others will require something more competitive. The only way to find out what you need to do to get into a certain school is go the admissions advisor and get the specifics for their program. Certainly no need to give up yet!

Others have touched on this, but you might also want to consider why you did poorly in the first place. With the exception of the death of your grandmother, I can't see why your bf getting a dui or your mother filing for bankruptcy would impact your ability to study? These were their problems, not yours. If you truly struggled with with the stress associated with the two things, you might want to consider working on some better coping skills, not; just for your nursing career, but for other aspects in your life as well. Good luck in finding a school that will work for you!
