Did you become a school nurse because you were burnt out from floor nursing?

As many as you can see I'm a student nurse who works as a health assistant. Once I get my nursing license( prayfully in 5 months !) I don't plan on staying in school health. I plan on getting my feet wet and getting some experience as a floor nurse in LTC or hospital setting. I see many health aids and school nurses who work in the HR because they see it as a CUSHION job. I know from experience that I have my busy days and sometimes I have my down days. However, I know that I want to get a little more experience as a nurse, sometimes all I feel like I'm doing is giving bandaids, checking temps, and handing out ice packs the majority of the time. So why did you get into school nursing ? Have it always been a passion or did you find it an escape from floor nursing ? I'm sure the not having to work nights or weekends or holidays is a big plus as well. Well share your input, thanks !

I came to school nursing from 9 years of Pediatric office nursing, and I cannot believe how well that experience has served me! Before the office, I spent 8 years inpatient OB,Nsy, etc. I was looking for a change, and an acquaintance of mine who works for the district called me and asked if I wanted to apply. I am finishing my first year as a school nurse, and I have learned so much. I love the kids, the autonomy, and the hours are great. The other nurses in my district have have been school nurses for many years. They are helpful, but mostly, you are on your own and learn it on the job. I have wonderful health aides who have helped me make it through the year. All in all, it's great !!

Im in the same situation, since I've graduated I have known that school nursing is what i want to do, but I felt obligated to get experience, Im currently working on a med-surg/ telemetry floor for 4 months now. I signed a contract with this hospital for the GN program so i feel obligated to stay for at least 1 year. I wish I could apply now because I have seen school nurse positions open for 09-10 school year. Im also scared about starting as school nurse with little experience (although med/surg really doesnt help for school nursing). What should I do??? Any advice?

Med surg DOES help for school nursing- ALL experience will help you in the long run. Being that the school nurse is so completely on their own, in many instances, the more experience you have, the better. I strongly believe that it may be too soon in only one year to apply to the schools. Will they even hire someone that has just graduated? There is not one nurse in my district that did not come with at least 20 years experience, though that much may not be necessary, LOL! But, when you are used to having other medical colleagues available all the time, it can be daunting to be the only medical person in your building, shouldering all the liability.
