I left nursing two years ago due to the needs of family members. That situation has changed, but I didn't go back to work. I decided to let my license go inactive this October at renewal time. I just don't see myself working anymore at all, let alone as a nurse. I haven't missed it a bit. I'm 58, and I worked for 20 years. In two years, I'll probably relinquish my license. It does feel a little strange, but maybe since I was older when I graduated, I never felt that being a nurse was a huge part of my identity.

I have to comment on the poster who said that teachers, etc. have similar issues when leaving in an emergent situation...no, they don't. Teachers have no issues with being absent, leaving school during the day, or otherwise being treated like a human being. The attitude this nurse has encountered is the primary reason that I left floor nursing, and have never regretted it. Educators treat their own much better than nurses do.

You might look into Utilization & Review, scheduling, insurance companies, or telephone triage. Hope you recover, that sounds so painful !

This thread is hilarious..thanks for the laugh. But, really, I am disturbed that anyone would ask this. Makes me wonder what else they would falsify if they were desperate. Just sayin...

It has been awhile since your post, but thought I would comment..In the clinic where I worked as an RN, unlicensed people called themselves nurses and called in Rx. I did bring this to the attention of management, who did nothing for several years. Eventually the unlicensed people were told not to call themselves nurses, but still called in Rx. I was told that they worked under the MD's license so that was permitted. Technically, I believe this is considered a verbal order, so I would think that a licensed person would need to call in the Rx..but this office didn't work that way. But then, would the MD be liable if the unlicensed person made an error?

How do they get anyone to work? I'm thinking I would not do it for $70/day..then taxes come out? Where do you all live? Is this a public school?

Yes I would, for all the reasons you mention. I got my BSN at age 36. I worked til last June, now I am 55, mostly retired..subbing as a school nurse once in awhile. My husband was career military, we had three college educations to pay for. The beauty of a nursing career is the flexibility, portability, and there is something for everyone.

I am subbing..resigned my FT school nurse position last year. I enjoy it. The district has quite a few subs, so haven't worked that much.

Oh sorry, I forgot that part.... I traveled between schools... Luckily, I had 15 minutes between lunch times for the students, so I could go and take care of them myself. I had back up from another school nurse, or parent coverage when I could not be there. I know this would not work for a lot of schools. California is just California...I am from there, so I know how things can be with budget issues and schools.

It is no surprise to me that a non-medical group of people are making medical decisions. What else is new? As an elementary school nurse I refused to delegate injecting insulin to unlicensed persons at school. By law in the state of Nebraska, it was up to me whether to delegate that, or not. If I had delegated it, I would have been responsible for the training and supervision of that person. It was my argument that (in my case) it was not in the best interests of the student (nor did I feel it was safe) to delegate this responsibility. Not to mention that the would-be delegate did not want to do it, and they would have to agree. I do realize that there may be cases where this is entirely safe and do-able.

Today is our 3rd. We have to make up 2 of them.
