Did anyone else feel this way?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I just question myself at times , but my dream has always been to become a nurse! is there any tips or tricks anyone has to overcome this feeling and get through nursing school? I know I can do it I just fear I wont be able to pass the big tests required to become an RN. Right now I am in the Air force trying to get into the Nursing Commsisioning program once I get my AA and pre reqs for the program.

OK - I had to re-read a couple of times to figure out your question. You're asking how we got over the 'second guessing' ourselves, not the 'dream of becoming a nurse' right?

If so, my input may be a bit discouraging.... IMO, that insecurity is going to pop up even when you're well established in your nursing career. For me, it arises whenever I think that I'm not fulfilling the professional standards that I have established for myself. Even after some decades, there are certainly days when I have those "I'd be better off as a WalMart greeter" thoughts.

But, with experience/age, I believe that your frame of reference will change a bit... you'll realize that self-doubt is an ephemeral thing. Life in general is full of ups and downs. We become more adept at realizing that the 'bad stuff' is not going to last forever - we just have to ride it out until things get better. So, my advice is to push past those doubts and forge ahead toward your goal(s). Trust yourself.

I don't want to spoil the ending for you, but it's all going to turn out all right.

What "big tests" are you referring to? The NCLEX? The quizzes? I applied to college at 44 years of age after not being required to study for any test in years. As stressful as my personal life was when I applied, if I survived an ASN program at that age, surely you won't have any problems. As for the NCLEX, my program prepared me so well that my NCLEX experience only lasted an hour from arrival time to departure time.

The actual experience of being a nurse is quite different. Even with my 30 years of nursing, I still say a short prayer before I go in the hospital because often, it is not a nurse's skill set that leads to errors, rather a combination of events hitting the nurse at once. So for now, don't borrow trouble. As you begin to learn 'nursing', you'll see how things all fall into place.

Thank you I really appreciate it!

Okay that did make me feel better I just wanted input on your story and how you felt and that helped thank you !
