Dialysis Charge nurses-tips

Published

Hello, looking for some tips to leading a unit as a charge nurse, organization and communication tips and tricks. Im considering applying to a charge  position and looking for other ideas to excel within the position other than the ones I've witnessed as a staff nurse. thanks

Depending on your organization, charge nurses have a checklist that they have to go through each day. Additional responsibilities may be tacked on top of those technical duties -- in some cases, more than you're willing to accept. I'm not saying ethically or something that is out of your scope, but responsibilities that you as a person will not accept, or not at least for at the moment or for the price that you're employer is offering.

Your new duties might be reasonable for the title and pay -- no weekends, no calls. Some clinics, in the same company, may want you to give your liberty or your first born. It's all about what BS you're willing to do.

A nurse I work with took the charge position a couple of months ago. So far while she seems to like it her primary complaint is she is now salary and being paid based on a 40 hour week. Problem is she working between 50 and 60 hours a week.  I think she's hoping to get closer to that 40 hour mark as she gets more proficient in the role but I don't know how that's going to be possible.

I know after watching her I sure wouldn't want the job. Sorry but not interested in basically working 10-20 hours a week for nothing. I am guessing that's pretty much the norm in that job since the more experienced nurse that everybody expected to take the job had zero interest in it.
