Diabetes education

I am not a nurse but am looking to go back to school this next year. I thought this might be a good place to get some direction. My grandma was just diagnosed with diabetes and was wondering about a good website that may be a good place to be educated on this disease. I would like to understand it so I can support her better. I am thankful she is even here when she went to the er she had a 1300 blood sugar. I hear that is amazingly high. Thanks for any tips.

As an individual who has had Type 2 for the past eighteen years I would recommend the following two sites:

American Diabetic Association

Joslin website

Both have message boards and a great deal of information for individuals who have been diagonsed as Type 1 or 2. Explainations, diets, medication management, to name a few.

Tell your grandmother to feel free to join us. If she wants the name of someone there, give her my screenname KIttykatrn62. We all have insight into our disease and are happy to share.

The ADA also has tons of free stuff you can order for your Grandma. I would also ask her Dr. about getting her into Diabetes Ed. classes, so she can get some tailor-made ed from a nurse and dietitian.
