Developing Nursing Preceptor Program

I am new to staff development role.I have many years in nursing .I have been asked to develop an nursing preceptor program for new nurses that are hired. I work in a small rual hospital.I have been asked to develop this program to help with recruitment and retention.I would appreciate any help.I would be interested in reviewing other hospitals programs.I would appreciate any web-site information.Thank you.

I put together a preceptor program here as well. I've had 2 classes go through and the evaluations were quite good. I used several different resources. I also ordered a kit through hcpro I believe. I used a lot of case scenarios provided in part through some of the directors sending staff through. I had every type of staff from CNA's to RN's to EMT's. I also work in a small hospital. I have been in staff development position as Nurse Educator about 2.5 years....still learning. Nursing over 25. I would be willing to share some info.

I am a new grad RN (38 years old - new career) who was hired earlier this month at a major metropolitan "safety net" hospital on a busy Med-Surg unit. On my unit, I get 8 weeks of training. My first week was all orientation. I didn't take care of my first patient until day 8. There's also quite a bit of reading, videos to watch, working with the unit HUC for the day, computer classes, etc., but that's just for the first 4 weeks. For my next 4 weeks I will have a full pt load (4) and will have a preceptor assigned to me. She will not have patients -- her job on these days will be only to work with me and train me in. Each preceptor on our unit volunteered for the job and had a small amount of training. Our clinical educator on the unit coordinates my schedule during this orientation period and gives me my 2 month and 6 month reviews, after which I'll be off probation. I have no other experience to compare with the one I'm having now, but I am really happy with the way I am being oriented to my unit, and to my new nursing role.

I purchased a program from HCPro. It's called Nurse Preceptor program builder. It has a CD with a lot of Word documents and can be modified for your own facility. The biggest help has been the case scenarios with true stories written on index cards so that those who are being trained to precept can problem solve some of the scenarios. You could probably do a search and find lots of different programs available. Good luck!

I Have Ideas But Do Not Know Where To Start, Any Ideas? It Is Suppose To Be Three Months. First Six Weeks Will Be General And Then The Next Six Weeks Will Be Unit Specific.

I am not sure I understand what you all are looking for, our preceptor program has classes for the preceptor.

We do bi-weekly meetings with the preceptee, preceptor, Staff Educator and manager of the unit.

orientatin times vary and are individualized.

I think if you were a little more specifc with what you are looking for I could probably share information.

We have something called the Professional Nurse Development program. It has ranged from 4-6 weeks. There is also a 6 month program in our local area that received a grant but it's much more in depth than the one I do. This program is geared for new nurses...originallly it was called the nurse transition program. It covers, progressional development, delegation & documentation, assessment, critical thinking skills etc. It is co-taught with some of the nursing directors of our facility. Usually it's a 2 or 3 hour class once weekly. The have to do journaling and assignments. It's kind of a crash course on some of the main aspects of nursing that students are frightened about. The evaluations have been good and they seem to appreciate working together with the directors (ED, Med-Surg, Educ, EMS, PI, etc) Most of the presentations have some type of power point, hands on, maybe a video etc. It changes every year based on evaluations and case scenarios. Hope this is helpful. It's a lot of work to put together but the co-teaching with other directors gives an unusual perspective that the students enjoy. Good luck!

I am a new Educator in a big teaching University. My Education Coordinator have ask me & 3 of my colleagues to develop a program to train 400 second year nursing students to learn "first aid" with in 2 days, from 9 to 4 pm each day. There is a big auditorium that can be divided into 4 sections, complete with big screen and all audio divices. They have divided all the topics for "first aid" into 4 of us. Now how to deliver our lectures within the given time with this huge number of students without any much disturbance from each other. How are we going to shift from each section without delay and that all 4 Instructors will conduct their own lectures assigned and shift from one to the other without much noise. Any tips and anybody who have the same experience that you could share will be very much appreciated. Thank you.
