I suffer quite a lot from depression. Is it possible to be a nurse with mental health issues? Please help.

As far as drug testing goes, it's hard to say. For example, fluoxetine is closely related to a stimulate and can test positive for amphetmines on cheap drug tests. This will result in the lab doing a CG-MS test and find the result was a false-positive for fluoxetine. If this gets back to HR, then they might frown on it. I think it's ridiculous, but people are petty about psychotropics. Drugs tests are so hit or miss. Some NSAIDs actually give false-positives for THC, but you'll have a hard time telling some people that. Heck, I've done a couple drug tests in the past when I know I had something in my system (legal script for an opioid) and they never called to confirm. These were pre-employment UDS for non-medical jobs.

Bipolar II here as well. Stable on meds for about 9 years. Have been told by coworkers and patients that I'm a really good nurse. Most of the time I think I am. Medication, therapy, and support group makes it possible. I think I'm a better nurse for having gone through my own struggles.

An episode of what?
My advice to the OP is to make sure that you are on a medication regimen that works for you. In my opinion, with the correct medications and support system you are no more or less prepared to deal with a career in nursing than anyone else. Be aware that nursing can be much more stressful than some other careers, and in my experience, this can lead to an exacerbation in symptoms of depression.
Also, because depression and anxiety can often go hand and hand, be aware that increased anxiety could be an issue for you with all of the additional stress.
I would also strongly suggest talking to a psychologist or psychiatrist. They can be so incredibly helpful and are great at finding a medication combo that works best for you.
Best of luck to you...I'm sure you'll do great!
