Deployments for RNs by Branch?

I am in final stages of deciding on a Nurse Corp (ANC vs AF NC).

1) I know the Army just upped the deployment terms to 15 months. Are RNs seeing full deployment lengths?

Recruiter states "orders are cut for 179 days but are told you're going for a year... Sometimes you stay, and some are sent back early."

Anyone with firsthand experience or at least direct knowledge to confirm or dispute this?

2) AF recruiter stated "tours are 3-4 months ... some longer, some shorter..."

Again, any direct or firsthand exp/ knowledge?

Any sage thoughts or admonitions?

Delaying MEPS to make this final decision...

Thanks for your help and your service.

The latest deployment info... the 28th CSH who is currently in Iraq just got their 12 month tour extended to 15 months, and the 86th CSH who's coming in to replace them will be there for 15 months. So yes, right now Army nurses are doing 15 month tours in Iraq.

Hello Jarnaes,

I will find out when I find out eventually but am curious to try to figure out which unit I would be attached to? I know my permanent post but wonder if you could tell me how this works.

BAMC, Ft. Sam Houston was listed in the unclassified documents as my permanent base.

Just want to put my 2 cents in.

My husband is active duty Navy corpsman and was sent to Afghanistan for 15 months to be with an Army unit. They had AF members in the unit as well that only stayed for approximately 4 months, maybe 6 at most. Those medical types no matter what you are were out on the front lines. Seems as though the Navy, Army and Marines are the ones with the year or longer deployments while the AF was only a few short months at that.

Army is 15months

AF is 6months

Marine 9mon-1year

Navy 6-9mon or 1year

Army Nurses are doing full 15months especially your 66H & 66H8A's & your very helpful & I can't live without 91WM (LPN's)

Retention is an issue. I have 14mons left & I'm already getting offers to stay.

AF is still using the 4month rotations for most of its medical personnel. CCATT and some other select medical personnel are doing 6month deployments.

Hi Bronx,

As a spanking new 66H -pre OBLC- I've been wondering what we do when deployed, (the soonest I read of a new 66H being deployed was online here and listed as being six weeks out of OBLC). I knew that the critical care 66H8A's went but, what do the med/surg nurses do?

If you have the time.
