I am beginning DSN in April of 2010 in the BSN program and am a little nervous about the Patho course. Does anyone know what book the proff uses and does anyone know what the syllubus is like? I would like to start reading the chapters because I have heard the first 3 months are the most intense. Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you all in advance

Quarter 1 is definitely very intense!!! It will challenge you in so many ways. You sound like a very motivated student and you should not have any problems as long as you stay on top of things. A&P I&II was difficult material for me and Patho was the same way, but I did the exercises from the book, went in when I needed to and used the Powerpoint slides along with the book to study and did fine (I wasn't easy or without tears though). The library at school has all the books you should be able to go there and study a bit before classes start, although I am not sure how much that would have helped me with out the lecture to go with it. Some students recorded his lectures and really found that useful. Brush up on ATP and some of the other important physiology and I think you will be fine. Good luck!

Thank you very much! I just want to be as prepared as I can be so it is a little less stressful when classes begin

Also, do you remember what chapters you study or do you study the whole book?

I think you are on the right path by getting the book in advance and pre-studying. It's an intense course in an 11 week period. You won't regret it.

Hello,

Sorry this is off topic.

I am sterting in April of 2010. Do you know when we will we get our schedules?

You probably won't get the schedules until about 3-4 weeks beforehand. I started the BSN this month and they sent us our schedules the beginning of December, but stated they were tentative (it ended up being the same schedule). To give you an idea, our schedule is:

Monday: 7:30 - 5:15 (altho our teacher changed the class to starting at 8am, another hour to sleep or study, lol)

Tuesday/Wednesday: OFF

Thursday: 9 - 6

Friday: 9 - 2:30

If you've already taken patho (I HIGHLY recommend taking it beforehand if you can, you won't regret it!) you'll start at Noon on both Thursday and Friday.

Good luck!!!

Thank you for the heads up...I'm trying to figure out how to make money while in school and it's posing to be a problem. aaaand I'm also trying to figure out maybe even taking out a personal loan...I don't...lots to think about

Thank you for the information on the schedule. Having already taken patho is really going to help me out. I am a little bit nervous about starting the program because I have no clinical experience what so ever ;(. Did you have any before starting the program?

denverstudent - yeah, I'm working (for now). It definitely helps since I don't have to take patho, but I'm so jealous of the people who aren't working. I don't have the option to not work and will have to reevaluate each quarter. I know at some point I'll have to stop working and take out a loan, but I figure the later I can do that, the better!

mkggirl - DON'T BE WORRIED AT ALL! :) I have worked in the medical field, but it's been YEARS, so it hasn't really helped me much. There are a ton of people in our class who have zero medical experience. Seriously, they will prepare you! I don't know if this is an option or not, but maybe there is an accelerated CNA class you can take before you start in April. I wish I had my license, I'd definitely be getting a job as a CNA for a couple of reasons...so I could be in the medical field and it might come together easier, but really so that I'd get more experience and it would give me an edge when looking for a nursing job.

Let me know if you guys have any other questions! :)

I have to take patho and that's what makes me nervous....what do you do for work and how many hours can you handle??

Thank you for responding. That was encouraging. I am really looking forward to starting the program in April.
