Daycare when working 12-hour shifts

Hello,

I just completed nursing school last week and am looking forward to working in long-term care. I am finding many positions open, but they seem to want me to work 7a-7p or 7p-7a. I am happy to work any hours assigned - even holidays. My concern is childcare. Can anyone in the Nashville, TN area tell me how to best secure daycare or night care for a toddler? So far, I was only able to find childcare during the week from 6a-6p.

I appreciate any advice someone can give. I am concerned about securing a job until I am sure I can guarantee that I will arrive to work on time every scheduled shift.

It's a common issue. Do you have anyone else that you can depend on? I don't, so I know that I can not work 12 hour shifts. You may be able to find a nanny that is willing to be flexible. There are also some home daycares that offer extended hours. The state's website lists daycares according to zipcode. Then you can click on each one and see their hours of operation.

Thank you so very much. I was able to identify a bunch that had the extended hours I needed. The knowledge sure took a lot of pressure off of my job search. Thank you.

I was lucky to relocate recently to an area that offers 24 hour daycare and it's a lifesaver.

When I didn't have that blessing, I searched for in-home daycare. The hours were very strict for some of the providers as they don't want kids very early in the morning, do overnight and want them picked up early in the evening. Basically all the 'normal' hours for the typical 8-5 job.

What worked for me was found 2 in home daycare providers so I could have back up. If one didn't want to do it for a certain day, shift, the other one would. It's tough at times but you can make it work out. Working nights was even more of a challenge because I had a newborn and while I had overnight daycare, I HAD to get some sort of sleep during the day and it's nearly impossible with a baby who needs to nurse/feed frequently. If you have older kids, it's a little more manageable in my opinion.
