Day in the life of a CRNA?

Published

Hello! I am currently a nursing student in a BSN program. I still have a year left before I graduate, but I know that after I do and work for awhile, I want to go back to school for APN. I am still unsure of what sort of specialty I would want to go in to, and know I probably won't be sure until after I have gained some experience, but I just want to get a sense for what each specialty is like. So, for those who are CRNAs, what is a typical day like for you? What do you like about your job? What don't you like? Tell me a story about an interesting or favorite case/patient. Anything that will give me an idea of what it is like to be a CRNA. Thank you!

You need statistics for sure, and in order to do statistics you have to have a very good handle on algebra and using a graphing calculator. Also, lots of programs require Organic Chemistry, which might as well be part algebra.

Statistics is a requirement for most programs. A graphing calculator is not necessary for any statistics course I have taken (4 so far). Some programs require organic chemistry and some require biochemistry. IMHO biochemistry is more helpful than organic chemistry. There is not a big component of higher math usage in nurse anesthesia programs, but you will need to know how to basic algebra/math.

Here's a link to the forum ssrhythm mentioned that can provide you some insight on anesthesia work:

Also, wtbcrna is spot on about the math needed for crna school.

And, to correct the misinformation, organic chemistry does not require any math.

I meant it follows the same principles of algebra. Like, when you have to balance equations or reactions, they both follow the same concepts.

My school required statistics but I don't remember using a sophisticated one. As for organic chem, I purposefully chose schools that's didn't require it because my I knew in Crna school, I'd be taught what they wanted me to know, not allllll of org. Chem

OMG I love this!!! Each line I just got more and more excited. I keep trying to get a really good idea of what CRNAs do and this really helps. Thank You! It's so exciting to have someone crashing, who you get to help save and then seeing them stable so fast!
