Every manufacturer of Central line catheters has IFUs (instructions for use) with their products and you need to check these on the brand you are using. As long as the catheter is open ended it generally can be used to monitor CVP just as a percutaneously placed central catheter.....a valved catheter either at the distal end (ie Groshong) or in the tails (as in the SOLO and PASV) are not accurate. Bard originally said with their SOLO it could be used for CVP monitoring but the result may be dampened (so IMO it fairly useless) . You really should not have to reinvent the policy if you have one b/c you just follow your existing one and state that some brands of PICCs may be used to obtain CVPs per manufacturers recommendation and you can list some acceptable types. What brand and kind of PICC are you using an what kind come into your facility with transfer patients from other facilities??
