curious...hemophobia anyone?

Nurses General Nursing

are there any nurses out there that went into nursing eventhough you knew full well that you were a little hemophobic or couldnt exactly stomach lacerations, nasty wounds, and the like? are any of you still like that??

oh, and were there any of you who went into nursing eventhough you were nervous about sticking needles into people?

sorry, im so curious...

I have seen nurse clean a wound, then go eat something. Clean up poop and then go eat something. Clean up vomit, then go eat something. But it seems like you let a nurse just hear someone do the clearing your throat thing and spitting, they throw their food down and say "thats it". It use to make me gag to hear it or have to empty the little emesis basins full of it (Ok still sends chills down my spine thinking about it.

I so agree with that. Show me festering wounds, dripping innards, puking people left and right and I'll say BRING IT ON! But don't ever hawk up anything from the nether regions of your lungs/throat and dare to spit it out....because I will go ballistic.

(I keep waiting for the first time when I will get beat up by some teenager who I've yelled at for hawking and spitting on the sidewalk in front of me:lol2: )

It use to make me gag to hear it or have to empty the little emesis basins full of it (Ok still sends chills down my spine thinking about it), but it has gotten better since I started taking care of a little boy on a vent with a trach that has to be suctioned, and also can't swallow well and has to spit at times into his rag that he carries around.

:chuckle :chuckle :chuckle I read this and all I could do was burst out laughing and say I could not agree with you more. I can do anything in fact I have but suction or clean up sputum or listen to people sniffing snorting or spitting ewwwwwwww. I gag more then the patient. You would figure after 27 years I would get used to it, nooooway.

You know someone told me a joke once that really rings true for me.

How do you tell the difference between a respiratory therapist and a nurse?

Put them in a pile of poop up to their necks, spit, and see who flinches.

I have a HUGE problem with blood and needles. The last time I had a TB test done I had to have a friend drive me because I was light headed and dizzy just thinking about it. Of course the actual injection itself lasted all but .5 seconds and luckily I had a good nurse who was a champ at giving intradermal injections! But just the thought of it NOW makes me a little light headed. I know I'm going to have to survive my med-assit and nursing school doing (and getting) injections all the time. I hope my teacher is right and I'll just "get used to it" like all of her otehr students, but I think it's going to be a while.... (all the nurses at the hospital say it's just something they got used to)

Sounds like a scene from ER! Too Funny.:lol2: :lol2:

Yeah, that is a good one :D

I don't mind it pouring all over the floor, it's hanging in a bag that bothers me :lol2::lol2::lol2:

Just grosses me out-- no religious problem with it, just don't like swapping bodily fluids and having to sign off on it like I'm signing for a new car.... But, that being said, when I was diagnosed with leukemia, I had to have 25 units of PRBCs/platelets... I didn't watch. :D

That right there is what makes me sick. Barf=yuck. I haven't started nursing school yet, but I am going in full knowing that blood and barf are my two weaknesses.

Let me rephrase that, needles and barf are my two weaknesses.

I'm fine with blood, the substance itself, (unless I can see bone or a foreign object protruding! YUCK!) but when you bring out that needle... injections or IV's or drawing blood... I can't handle having it done to me, and I know I'm going to be sooo nervous/queasy the first time I have to do it to a fellow student in class....

Barfing is just something I don't know if I'll ever get used to.

If someone barfs, I barf. End of sentence.
