CSUSM Spring cohort 2010

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

hello,

I'm new to allnurses but I was wondering if anyone on the forums got accepted to CSUSM's spring cohort for 2010. I know that the cohort has recently been canceled because of school budget cuts, but I wanted to know if anyone was interested the meeting up and signing a petition or writing a letter to the university's president regarding the situation. My friend and I both got accepted and are planning on meeting with the nursing adviser soon. We both find it unfair that the school would send us acceptance letters and then inform us that the cohort is now canceled and that we would have to apply again next year without any gaurentee of being accepted.

hey guys. So I found out that the cut off was 49 which blows because I made the cut off but they decided to go with a lottery system and I wasn't so lucky. :?

yeah, sorry about that. i knew a gilr last year that she did not get in for one point and they the lottery too.

she was bummed. are you apply next year? did she say we could apply?

thanks

Hi, i think we all could re-apply, no doubt about that. we just have to earn more points. i bet its also going to be more competitive as well. what me and poleenbee are trying to do is at least get those other 16 people to have at least a guaranteed spot for fall if all else fail for spring. it's not fair that they send us an acceptance letter telling all of us that we have a guaranteed spot for spring and then take it back just because they lost the funding. they might as well just have sent us a rejection letter from the very beginning instead of keeping our hopes up.

poleenbee we'll try to figure out something. it seems like the nursing program is a game of luck to me now.

I agree with at least giving us a spot on the fall 2010. When you hear that you got accepted to a program, you change your schedule and stuff around and sometimes make certain sacrifices in order to accommodate being in the program.

For example: If I applied to a bunch of nursing programs and got accepted into both CSUSM and another school's program, BUT CSUSM was my first choice. So I tell the other program(s), no thanks, i got accepted into another program(CSUSM's). Then, WHAM!, no more program and no more certainty as to whether I'll get accepted into another program the next year. Poleen Bee, maybe you can also bring that up during your meeting.

They also suggested that I try for the Accelerated program, but I'm nowhere near close to finishing a degree of a different major. What I don't get is why a degree is needed for the accelerated program. For example: Person A has all of their classes done and needs only the NURS classes in the program to graduate. Person B has a useless degree not pertaining to the health field and would probably still require other nursing classes such as Anth 301 or Phil 345, etc. Why does Person B have the advantage of being able to be in the accelerated program, when that person clearly has a disadvantage?

Hey guys,

I am really bummed out about our situation. I was thinking that we should all meet up and start a draft and send letters of appeal to the Governor. Poleenbee and I are meeting up on Tuesday to go to the counselor. I have been thinking and researching the whole day of what I/we could do. This situation they have put us have limited our options. we can't even apply to other state schools for spring because they wont accept transfer students. Only HSU accept spring transfer students, and it is all the way up north close to Oregon.

Let me know what you guys think. We have to start acting on this instead of just letting our frustrations get us down.

Paula

I know, it totally limited my options. I would've been able to apply to the winter program at CSUSB, but cuz i thought i was accepted i didn't take any summer courses, which means I am no longer a student there and can't "transfer" or apply for admissions.

One suggestion i have would be to draft something up and send it to the advisor and ask her to please forward it to the other people in our "cohort", since she can't give us the email addresses due to confidentiality.

Honestly, I don't think writing the Gov. will do anything, it's the head honchos at school who we should target.

i agree, the gov can care less. he has bigger fish to fry with the state crisis.

what about the school dean or the director of the nursing program?

are l...e and n..y the last authorithy on deciding if they can get us a spot for the fall or at least for the last fall?

also i am afraid that if those two ladies have the final authority on deciding who gets in, can they permanently block us. i mean they say the points get raised every year, but are we suppose just to take their word for it?

i knew a guy who got in last year and i asked him how many point did he got and he told me, "they did not they me my points, they just told me i got in"

i kind of wonder and it is really sad that they wont tell us the reason, the logic of their decision of why they do not give us a secure spot for the fall, it would be the decent thing to do.

I'm sure the advisors aren't the last people you could talk to. I'd bring it up with the director of the SON. Lemme know if you need to find out who that is, although a quick search on the SON website will tell you who you need to talk to.

FYI the points are raising....I'm in Cohort 4, and the lowest point total to be admitted was 46. I know this for a fact from the person themselves.

Good luck sorting this out....I really do hope you guys get some sort of guaranteed spot for Fall '10...my sister is one of the people who got into Spring '10 and now she's SOL

Good luck you guys. That all sounds very frustrating. Are there schools in the area where you could work on your LVN? I think I heard that the LVN to BSN step up program is still available at CSUSM.

Also, Mira Costa is developing an RN program...I don't know if there is a waiting list yet but I found this information on their website:

**FUTURE REGISTERED NURSING PROGRAM UPDATE**

MiraCosta College is waiting for Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) approval to offer an Associate in Science degree in Registered Nursing program. We hope to receive this approval by September 2009. Once we have received approval, the application will be available on our website with detailed information on deadlines and how to apply for this program.

Please note: We are not taking names or applications at this time.

The LVN-BSN program at CSUSM isn't a separate program really. You're on the same track as the generic program, there's just some classes or clinicals that you don't have to take. One of my friends is a LVN in the program and it kind of sucks for her because she's there with us for the entire 3 years, but doesn't have to take some of the classes....so at that rate, you're looking at 3 years for the LVN-BSN, plus however long it takes you to get your LVN license.....getting your ADN and then doing a RN-BSN would be faster, but you have to deal w/ lotteries and waiting lists

Thanks for the reply. It really sucks but we don't want step down without a fight. I've had to argue with them when they miscalculated my points and rejected me from both spring and fall. My friend and I both don't have the time to wait another year. I agree with you about double charging. I would rather be charged double tuition then wait and I'll definitely suggest that to to the person I am meeting with on tuesday.

Since the minimum pts of the people getting accepted seemed to increase each year, the chances are that we'll probably find ourselves in the same situation in fall 2010. And I've almost run out of ways to increase my pts. My friend and I are going to try our best to find a way around this, send letters and maybe even beg hospitals and orgs for funding/donations. =P I'll definitely let you know what happens. But just curious, would you happen to know the minimum amt of points of the 14 spring people who got accepted into the fall cohort.

any updates about the meeting?

Unfortunately there's no good news. We tried our best and brought up all the suggestions but we weren't able to get guaranteed spots or double tuition. The meeting basically turned into a 'how to get more points' meeting. Sorry guys. I guess we just have to wait another year. She suggested to try to make sure to get more than 54 points because it rises each year. And if you didn't get straight As on your A1 and A3 class, you can take it over again. I didn't know that getting two A-'s could mean a 2pt difference in the point system.
