Hello everybody! I was just curious if there are any other fellow classmates applying for the fall 2016 nursing program at college of southern Nevada? I am applying early (I'll be short 224 and com 101) but hoping to get picked early! Anybody else apply to csn early and get accepted? Looking forward to hearing from you all
Hello all!
I too am applying for the 2016 Fall Semester shortly! I plan to turn in my packet tomorrow,
so I have about a week to fix anything they might say I am "missing". I am super excited and
scared all at once, and I hope to see you all!
I was just wondering if anyone happens to know any more specific information about the program.
I've tried consulting with my Health Programs Advisor, but he isn't very specific. I'm curious
about the amount of hours I can expect to spend IN CLASS/CLINICALS/ON CAMPUS versus Study time
at home, and also, how other people balance work/school AND CHILDREN, as I am a single mother.
I pretty much need to decide now if I am going to work through the program or not, and since
I own a house and am the sole provider to my single-family unit, I need to prepare now if
housing changes need to be made (I may have to move in with my parents to complete the program!)
It will take at least a few months to rent my home, time to prep it, move, etc. I can't make any
real plans because the advisor won't tell me what other people in my position do to get through school.
Any suggestions/experience (real life or otherwise!) would be greatly appreciated. It sounds retarded
but I have very little planned for how I am going to pay for this schooling and continue to support
myself and my daughter, mostly because I didn't know if I would get in the first try, but having passed
my Kaplan on the first try, this is now becoming a real possibility...
Also, I am wondering what expected and even unexpected things happen while you are in the program!
I heard from some other students recently that within the first week of the program, nursing students
are giving a "Dimensional Analysis" test (without notice!)and that if you don't get a 95% or higher
you are immediately eliminated from the program. Has anyone else heard this? Or anything else for
that matter?!
GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE, OF COURSE :)
Hi JC! I am currently a second semester student at CSN.
In my first semester, I had Nurs 101 clinical on Tuesday, lab on Wednesday, and lecture on Thursday. I took Pharmacology online. I spent about 20 hours or so a a week working on school work outside of school itself. When we started clinical in the rehab facility, I spent a little bit more time prepping for clinical. We were required to get patient information before clinical. The clinical worksheet included listing all the patients medications and completing a med-table. For clinical we only had two APA papers due. I was able to work two per diem jobs, which was almost like working full-time, and passed the semester like it was nobody's business!
This semester is more time consuming with med-surg and mental health. Luckily, mental health lab is only for the first two weeks and med-surg lab is almost done. Second semester has more papers and paper work due. I go to school from Monday thru Thursday. And I spend a more time studying than I did last semester.
Regarding the math test: The math test should not be unexpected! You are required to take a math test for dosage calculation every semester! During orientation, the NURS 101 coordinators went over the fact that there is a dosage calculation math test. They also recommend taking tool box class to help you be prepared. In the first semester, I believe you can get 2 wrong and still pass. However, in the semesters afterward you can only get one wrong. You have 2 chances to take the math test, unless they let you take it in the second orientation (like they did for my group)- then its actually three chance, unless they changed it..I'm not too sure. Every semester afterward, you only have 2 tries. The math test usually happens within the second or third week. And if you fail on your last chance, you are out...unfortunately.
Hope that clears up a little bit of your questions/concerns.
