CRNA vs. ACNP

Published

Hi all,

I am in Acute care Np program at UMDNJ. I have a plan in applying to CRNA school by the end of august, in which time i will have one year of critical care experience. I have had telemetry, ER, cardiovascular step down, and now medical/surgical ICU experiences. The program I am in right now, I have taken pharm, nursing research, psych courses. These courses are required for CRNA courses as well. I will finish ACNP by the end of August, 2011.

I have been thking of going to CRNA school. If i apply now, the class i will be considered is Sept 2011, by which time i will finish ACNP. Here are my questions:

1. Is it worth it to finish all the courses for ACNP? or should I wait?

2. Is medical/surgical ICU good enough along with all the other experiences and course work I am taking. I have been getting A's in all so far.

3. Will most of my credits transfer or I have to take the courses again?

thanks

I think you should call the CRNA program counselor or director to ask these questions regarding your ACNP/CRNA courses. Every school is different and they might waive certain courses since you are going to both at the same school. Keep in mind that Pharm and Anesthesia Pharm are two completely different courses and even if you have the same courses...the concentration of study might be different so you might have to retake some of them over again.

MSICU does count as the 1 year ICU experience

I just got in and asked the same questions- Here is my advice:

1. If you can afford the time and money, yes by all means.

2. It will certainly get you an interview at most schools- the rest is up to you.

3. This is completely up to the graduate school and the program director= some do, some don't.

You have a good start, good luck.
