CRNA with an old misdemeanor?

Nurses Criminal

Published

Hello everyone,

I'm just starting out in my nursing education so I'm still three years away from a BSN. I know without a doubt I want to earn a graduate degree and my ultimate goal as of now would be a DNAP. When I was 18 I received a possession of marijuana and an impaired driving ticket. The same year I received an underage alcohol ticket. Since this time 8 years has passed and my record has been clean. By the time I would be eligible to even apply to a CRNA program it will have been 12-13 years since and as far as typical background checks go the charges were either expunged or dismissed due to a "Plea of abeyance". Does anyone have any insight on whether this would hold me back? What sort of documentation should I start working towards gathering?

Every BON exists to protect the PUBLIC not nurses and to do that they need to make money. I had an old (20+ years) "no contest" on my record for shop lifting. I had been through several background checks to work as a correctional nurse and it never was an issue. I moved to a new state and failed to mention this on my application. This "no contest" popped up and I spent about $2,000 getting my new license. I had to take several "ethics classes" to prove I was trustworthy. I had worked in corrections for YEARS without a problem! If that doesn't prove someone ethical, I don't know what does. Don't count on anything being "expunged" because the BON will always find something then charge you for false reporting on your application. That's how they make money and they don't care that was a lifetime ago, they just want their money.
