Books for new ICU Nurse

Specialties Critical

Published

Hi, I'm going to be working in a SICU after graduation. Though I did an externship in Neuro ICU, I want to be familiar and brush up on the topics that I'll be learning during my orientation.

Does anyone have recommendations for either review books or general info books for ICU nursing? I've used icufaqs.org but I'd love an actual book to reference.

Thanks!

For day to day stuff, I really liked critical care made incredibly easy. It helped a lot with understanding the basics and is a really easy read for learning waveforms and blood gas interpretation and whatnot.

For the more nitty gritty stuff, I still refer to The ICU Book by Marino. It's a thick, kind of intimidating book that goes into a lot more detail on just about everything. When i had a really specific question about, say vent mechanics, that's the book that I would go for.

Hope that helps!

Don't forget that YouTube is filled with a plethora of information and clear cut narratives and animations. When digging into the details those aforementioned books are great. When you want to understand concepts, procedures, pathophysiology of diseases, etc YouTube will make it easier to tie things together.

Thank you so much!

If you want something to take a break from the textbooks...try "A Nurses Story" by Tilda Shalof. I couldn't put it down! Non-fiction about an RN working in a Toronto ICU.
