Crippling Test Anxiety

Dear Nurse Beth,

I'm in the process of applying for NP school, I want to become a FNP. The only thing holding me back is the instant anxiety I feel thinking about the boards. Does anyone know if the ANCC, nurse practitioner required boards are as bad as the NCLEX? Are they comparatively as extensive and intense? As long? The NCLEX prep was rough for me. I just want to be prepared for a possible "NCLEX Part Deux."

Dear Anxious,

Congrats on deciding to become an FNP!

Focusing on NP boards before you have even been accepted to NP school is not helpful. NP boards are a long ways off, and your program will prepare you to pass boards.

Comparing the difficulty of NP boards to the difficulty of the NCLEX is only increasing your anxiety and your experience with the NCLEX is not an indicator of your experience with NP boards.

Instead, focus on the task at hand, one thing at a time. Apply to school, and once you get in, focus on your studies. Be the best student you can be and learn all you can.

Being prepared for a test is one of the best ways to reduce anxiety. Do not allow your anxiety to get out of control, and re-focus your thoughts when you feel yourself becoming anxious.

Remember, you are already a successful test-taker. You've already proven you can do this.

Best wishes,

Nurse Beth
