my friend james recently passed his canadian exam. we both work in london, u.k. james has gotten his registration form but its asking for a criminal record check. if he waits until he gets to ottawa to do it can he work in the meantime because he says according to the police it takes ages to get it through. thank you from james, and i.

Don't know about Ontario, but here in Alberta, you have to have the criminal records check done before you can set foot on your unit. It usually takes a couple of days if you go through the RCMP or upto four weeks if you live in a large city and use the municiple force. They are valid for 90 days and a new one is required every time you change employers. I think they cost around $35.

Having said that, can you obtain a criminal records check from your local police station in the UK before you emigrate? Might help somewhat.

BC is the same as Alberta. I don't think you can even get an interim permit until your criminal record check is done. I would have him get working on this right away in case there are any delays. Two years ago I recall a student trying to get a criminal record check done, and it was taking months. I phoned the police station because we were trying to figure out what the delay was. I was told the RCMP had to check with INTERPOL! He was originally from South America, so I don't know if this was the reason for the delay. Fortunately, it came through the day before he was to start clinical, but he was sweating buckets. Good luck! :)

Thank you both of you, I passed the info onto James and he's quite worried as he had hoped to go to ottowa soon. He dosent think he can start the whole thing in London but what can he do. And why do canadian hospitals recruit foreigners if they cant work for several months after they get there?. How can he live while waiting for this check to come through. I totally understand having the check done and welcome it but it takes so long. Perhaps he will try elsewhere for the moment. Thank you for your speedy reply. From James and I.

Same thing with someone being recruited to work in the US. Clearance is needed. It is actually required before yoy can be issued a license. So, unfortunately it needs to be done before he can get a license and the hospital will permit him to begin work.

I forgot to ask you something.

Is a hospital sponsoring the immigration application?

I was talking to a friend in the RCMP about this the other night. There is a pretty extensive security check done prior to immigration papers being issued (well, the gov. claims its extensive, but sometimes you have to wonder). Do you have a contact name/number for the hospital or nurses association, call them and ASK, if the immigration clearance is sufficient. I mean if you are cleared to enter the country, you should be clear enough to begin the first job, especially if the employer is acting as a sponsor. The sponsor's name would have to appear somewhere on the documents and I imagine that no immigration approval would indicate that there was a problem with the individual somewhere in their background.

But you do have to have a new clearance done locally everytime you change jobs, its to do with the protection of people in care and children.

I really don't know why you would need information on security clearances in the US, when you specifically asked for Canadian information

I got confused.

I'm waiting my application approved by CRNBC now. I original came from Taiwan, but finished my nursing education in the States. Does CRNBC require my criminal record check from Taiwan, US or Canada? But I've never been in Canada.

Passing this all on to James, thanks again
