drinking question!
during the first 20 minutes of the cpne implementation phase, i am a little confused about liquids that the patient may be drinking.
as silly as this might sound - should i take note as to the amount of liquid beverage they are drinking.... such as marking the cup they are drinking from during this first 20 minutes so i can measure the total amount at the end of the implementation period?
this test is like childbirth, you know, the due date is coming up, and you prepare for it but you truly don't know what is really going to be like until you start gettin those labor pains.....

I wouldn't get that insane.
If they do not have a beverage no problem. If they do, eyeball it. Most cups are 6 - 8 ozs. If it's half full, figure 4 oz and if half of that is left it's 2.
Convert it to mL = 15 cc to an ounce? I always forget if a med cup is one or two ounces.
They're not looking to fail you. Just announce to the patient that you are going to be monitoring his fluids and the CE will know that you know you're monitoring I/O. On my last PCS the pt really didn't drink much so she TOLD me, "Just record sips."

as soon as you walk through the door you are marked with intake. Either record what is in the cup or a good tip I got, fill the cup up and move the pt pitcher away from pt so that they dont fill it themselves, then you know what and how much the pt drinks. Most test sites have a I&O sheet that has common meal tray items that need to be recorded, if not ask the primary RN. The primary RN can be a BIG help and you can use him/her as a resource! If not then most items have oz. on the side of the container....record what is open and explain to the pt to make sure NO one takes the tray away.
