I'm getting ready to apply for New Grad residency programs. I have prepared a cover letter and it sounds pretty solid, but my mother (Who works in accounting) says that cover letters are outdated. Is this true? Does this apply to hiring in the nursing world?

I think if the application says that the cover letter is optional, I would include it. It makes you stand out if you have a solid cover letter.
However, if the application only asks for XYZ, I would not include it. It may be looked at as extra papers to look over. But that's my opinion.
I'm applying to residency programs in the spring, so I would be interested in hearing what others have to say. Following!
My resume is pretty much bare bones and fluff considering I'll be a new grad. I want to include a cover letter because I really "sold" myself. Most of the residency program requirements only list a resume. No cover letter. How do I stand out?
In regards to the cover letter, you're trying to "sell" yourself, essentially. I like to include how I would make a good candidate by listing my strengths and the positive things previous employers have said about me.
Since it's a nurse resdiency program, they aren't anticipating you to have much nursing experience. Your resume will probably not be more bare than the average applicant. :)
Thanks, crack!
