It seems that the number of post by frantic new grads who have not been able to get a job are dropping off. I think maybe the tight job market is easing but I don't know that. Actually I am worried about you and if you are one of the people that posted what a bad time you were having but you are now employed I would like to know that. Not kidding, I have spent sometime worrying. Worrying because I remember a tight job market in the mid 80s when we lost a generation of nurses because they went off and did something else. I certainly don't want that to happen again. So let us know please.
I have applied for jobs since February and have gone on at least 4 job interviews. I even interviewed for a position only to find out that they weren't hiring for the position right at the moment. I am so frustrated. I just stopped thinking about it and have been focusing on my boards. I don;t know what else to do. A lot of my classmates are having the same problem. I am hoping that after I get my license I will have more luck.
I had hoped the same thing. I now have a license in hand, but no offers . But I just keep filing out apps and I am sure something will come up! Good Luck!
Here's my story:
I graduated May 16th and did not have a job lined up. I had gone on 4 different interviews and started applying in February. I was not job offered on any of them.
I applied every week for any nursing position I could find, no matter if it said experience wanted or not. I applied to the Community Blood Bank, Hospice, LTC's, and all the hospitals within the neighboring state and within state and still nothing.
I got frustrated and decided to go back to the corporate world because I have bills to pay.
I went on 3 interviews in the corporate world and was job offered for one of those jobs at an insurance company. I accpeted it and the job will start on July 20th. I was somewhat relieved, thinking it's finally an income coming into the house. In the meantime, I quit applying for nursing jobs and just focused on studying for NCLEX. I took NCLEX yesterday and got 75 questions. According to the "trick" I passed.
Anyway, in the meantime, I prayed to God to place me where he see's me fit. Not just give me "any" nursing job, but one that He knows is a good fit for me and I did ask Him for either an Oncology position at a faith based Magnet hospital, or an ICU position in a teaching hospital. And I asked for guidance passing my boards. I left it alone after that.
On Monday, I get a call from the Nurse recruiter at a Level I Trauma teaching hospital regarding my application I put in for the ICU. She tells me they are building a new ICU unit in December and are looking for experienced and new grads to be part of the team. After a brief conversation, she set me up with an interview with the ICU manager and director.
She also asked if I had taken boards and I told her I will in a couple of days, and she was thrilled to hear that!
Today, I go on an interview for the ICU position. The interview lasted about 45 minutes and the ICU manager pretty much job offered me right there on the spot! She told me was impressed with my interviewing skills and my qualifications and feel I would be a good asset and fit for the new ICU unit.
I get a call from the nurse recruiter 3 hours later, offering me the job! I start August 3, and not only is it the ICU, but I am part of the New Grad Residency program, which I will be going to all areas of the hospital and end up in my ICU job by the end of the year.
I couldnt be more excited! God was in control the entire time! I went on all those interviews to prepare me for this. I think I pretty much nailed that interview!
Don't give up. If it can happen for me, it WILL happen for you! Keep God first!
Your story is great to hear. Minnesota is not good right now. There are only a handful of classmates that I know who received a job. Luckily I already have a good corporate job, but my company is not doing well. My psotion is relatively secure but the situation is still worrisome.
I have a applied in state and out of state. I have inquired with the military, to rejoin, the healthcare programs are at capacity due to the economy.
I am really frustrated too, but God did bring me to this, through school, through NCLEX and he surely will not abandon me know. . . .
Good to know there are those out there having success!!
Keeping my fingers crossed and my faith strong. . .
Peace
