Cost of textbooks

Published

Great news for current and future students about the cost of books - sadly its coming a little too late for me :p

A new law requires prices and other details of textbooks to be published in the course catalog so students have the time to shop online for a cheaper version, and also the useless multimedia bundles are a thing of the past. I occasionally used my drug book's CD, but I never had use for the others and they can drive up costs by $50.

One more way nursing school is becoming more affordable! Yay!

Well theres always Chegg.com: Cheap Textbook Rentals. Best way to Rent Books for College where you can rent textbooks for the semester. Thats what I plan on doing. Its much cheaper.

Nice...finally someone is looking out for the students. Of course, just as my luck always is, I just finished with school but this will save money for so many. I maybe had to buy 1/4 of my textbooks from the school itself because I always searched for the better deals when they sent out the lists. I remember calling the bookstore one time and asking for the ISBN number off of one of the textbooks that they wanted $182 for. They told me their books didn't have ISBN numbers. Really??? I was told, when I worked at my local library, ALL books had ISBN numbers. Joke was on them because I was able to google the ISBN number...:lol2:

That is great news, I just wish my school posted the books a month in advance instead of 2 weeks of classes. Makes me nervous going to school the first couple of weeks without books lol. The book bundling is the absolute worst waste of money. I've gotten smarter about buying books -- buying international editions and older editions, and now my semester books rarely are over $150.

Mariposabella - I always use Half.com. Maybe in undergrad I could have gotten away with renting, but I think for nursing you have to keep the books for NCLEX and even after you're practicing. The bill also paves the way for free online texts, btw.

momandstudent - I really think all books do have ISBNs. Good for you for sticking it to them! That's ridiculous.

TokyoRose - part of the bill says they have to post the details and prices for the books far in advance of that usual 2-week time frame, which is great news. Apparently, many profs don't know or care how much the texts they're making the students buy actually cost.

My school does not sell books individually......OH NO..we have a "custom bundle" that has its own ISBN. The whole package is wrapped up so you cannot see whats in the bundle. Just another way to make a buck. Thankfully, I can put the cost of books on my student loan.
