Cost of books first semester?

Yikes. I'm starting nursing school in a few weeks. I just got our syllabus and list of "required reading." I already have 4-5 of the books.. the other 13 or so books are going to add up to almost $700

Um, I don't have $700! I do have some $ on my pell grant let after registration and I'm hoping that will be enough.

Is this a normal amount? Are "required" books really required? Also, is it going to be like this every semester??!

My books for Nur 101 were about $700....if I went through the school bookstore it would have easily been $1500. We were supposed to buy a nurses pack $200....with the crapiest stethescope I have ever seen, I've honestly played with better ones as a child. I think the pack should have cost $25 for what they had in there. Uniforms...$150.

My favorite book search site is http://nyus.cheapbooks.com/?adwords&gclid=CN_a8vL4-I8CFRuhFQodMg5kMA

Go down and you can enter the ISBN, title or author. My school sends out my leftover money in October :-( So I'm hurting when I have to buy books. I usually have to put them on credit card until I can pay it off in Oct. Last semester my credit card was maxed out (thank you health care system...) and I couldn't get another card anywhere. For some reason Paypal let me get their buyer credit, up to $300....which luckily barely covered everything. So if you're desperate and have bad credit, set up an account, verify it, and then apply for their credit card....if you're turned down then they should give you the buyer credit account. You can use it on ebay (and Valore books I think) which is usually cheapest anyway. Unfortunately I don't think you can use it on Amazon or half.com.

As far as books you don't need... We had to buy a medical dictionary, which I could do without cause you can always find terms on the internet. If you have to buy a book about writing in APA format, that book is worthless....you can easily find that info on the internet too. As far as everything else, if they say its required then buy it. Even some of our optional stuff really wasn't optional... But hey, you should keep using these books. My 2nd semester, I only have 1 book to buy.

My books will cost $500 used -- I have to wait until the financial aid office gives me a book voucher to purchase them. If the used ones are all gone by then, it will cost upwards of about $750. My uniforms are another $225 (which I have to purchase from the school's bookstore), my shoes, my stethoscope (which *has* to be a Littmann Classic II or some such, and the best price I have found is right around $80) -- soooo, all told, I'm laying out about $1000 before classes even start.

Oh, and I forgot the titers and vaccines that my insurance doesn't cover, the application and testing fees, the CPR class... I feel like I am hemorrhaging money! Hopefully, succeeding semesters won't be quite so expensive.

My books were included in tuition but I've spend already $500 in extra books and its only the first term.

Close to $900 with tax :(

I just looked all mine up and it's about $885 for the required books, add on the "recommended" books (what does that mean anyway?!? roll the dice and hope the prof doesn't use that book??) and it's over $1000. :stone And this was through amazon.com which is a little cheaper than the bookstore on campus. I'm hesitant to order used books cause I hate highlighter but I guess I'll have to get over it.

Try half.com. It's a part of e-bay, and I'VE ALWAYS bought my books for school there. Had I not gotten a scholarship (that covered books only btw) I wouldn't be able to go to school or I'd have to pray and order from half.com.

The books there are generally about 80% cheaper than buying new. I found a lot of my books for 3 and 5.00.

I really appreciate this thread! I had no idea! I have gone to the other sites mentioned; ebay, amazon, etc and saved while doing my pre-req's but MAN! I am glad to be forewarned about the program books cost being heavy right off. I start this coming year. Thanks!:yeah:
