Do correction nurses get paid more than hospital nurses?
That depends. LPNs in Tennessee can make *much* more money in corrections than in hospitals. RNs would be insulted by the pay cut they would take to work in corrections...as a staff nurse.
It really depends on your area and other variables.
I agree, it depends on the area, also if the correctional facility is county or state. In my area LPNs at a hospital start out at $12/hr and the county correctional facility starts at $13/hr. Not much of a difference, however if you work for the state at one of their facilities LPNs START at $27/hr.
What state is that, if I may ask. In tennessee, state nurses are lucky to make $13/hr. while working at the county jail the pay is substantially more.
I live in PA. We had reps from the state dept of health come to our school trying to recruit new nurses and gave us a sheet with the starting rates and $27/hr for an LPN was the lowest start rate. It is also posted on their website.
The link below has the salary ranges for UTMB nurses - this is the university that has the contract to provide care in state prisons in the eastern half of Texas. I've heard they will be taking over the western half as well in the near future. Look for Nurse Clinician - Outpatient III (position # 1060)- that is usually what they hire. For LPN/LVN see position #1072 on the list
Check the left sidebar for the link for salary and job descriptions.
In short,
RN = $45000 to $78000 per year
LVN = $26000 to $40000 per year
I've interviewed with UTMB. They have their stuff together, great benefits, very good care, excellent telemedicine program (they also do cruise ship and polar ice station telemedicine). I would love to work for them, but it's just not possible right now.
anyone know about KY, or TX? thanks!
