Coordinating concussion managment with physican

Published

Hi. I am a high school CSN. We have a comprehensive concussion managment team which includes the student, parents, myself, administration, counsellors, school psychologist, and athletic trainer.Accommodations are based on the student's symptoms and dr recomendations.

Does anyone have any suggestions for coordinating back to school protocol with area physicians? The plan of care varies greatly between physicians. Some recommend students stay home until symptom free for 24 hours; while others order brain rest for 2 weeks regardless of symptoms.

We allow the physician to decide when it is a good time to return. Many students return too soon and end up in my office for the majority of the day, which does them NO good. We do not have a set plan in place, except that we notify the teachers to allow for extra time with school work, and if necessary depending on how many absences...possibly home instruction.

We have the student's doc clear the student back. The trainer then starts a 5 day return to play. If the kid can pass the return to play protocol with no symptoms this report is written up by the trainer, signed by me, reviewed by the school doctor and then a gym pass is given by me to the student.

If the child is symptomatic at any time during the 5 day return to play protocol they start it again. If they continue to be symptomatic their parent is called and they are recommended to go back to their doc for further evaluation. Sometimes kids are out for a month with a concussion.
