Contrast and Renal Failure

Published

What is the physiological process that causes contrast to cause renal failure?

Not well understood. Several pathways may be involved. Why do you ask? School or work related?

work related. Is it because the contrast is thick and blocks the tubules? Please don't laugh.

Three broad concepts may play a role:

1) Direct toxicity

2) Hemodynamic alterations and compromised renal perfusion

3) Production of toxic substances such as free radicals

A combination of the three is also possible, and likely IMHO.
